Always wondered, what you reckon Mike (or Stone for that matter)
would do in the months in between studio and touring as far as maintaining his skills. Would Mike consistantly train or be trained by a teacher you think?
I know my playing level drops if I dont pick up a guitar for a while, just wondering what your thoughts are on what a top level guitarist would do to keep trim in the time off.

  • Guitarists like Petrucci, Hammet, and Vai have to constantly practice to keep the level of skills consistent. In his video, Petrucci talks about his practice routine between tours and recording. He about two hours a day of skill building followed by some improve time.

Mike said he's sooo good that he never needs to practice . . .
Ohh yeah sorry, that wasn't Mike, that was Yngwie Malmsteen.
And we all know that that's a bunch of B.S. Everyone needs to
practice to maintain their technique. You know Mike practices a
lot in his down time - those that don't practice loose it, so good
musicians tend to practice a lot (basically whenever they can).
    Cheers . . .

  • He probably gets together with Matt, Jeff, and Ed and jokes about Stone's singing on "Don't Gimme No Lip" and questions whether Jeff is actually part mountain lion due to his 'lumbejack' facial hair. When he's not doing that, he's watching Saved By The Bell and wondering why he couldn't get Kelly and Zack did. Guitar? Yeah, that comes in handy when the power goes out.

  • With Mike's style he doesnt have to practice like a Malmsteen,Vai, Wylde.

He has a much looser style, more in the vein of Page or Hendrix.

Aside from touring, I would guess he plays about as much or maybe less than the average. He just kinda needs to make sure he keeps his memory muscles in shape.
  • ...i know hes got his own personnal guitar studio in his house.

What I'd give for an afternoon in that studio.
Does anyone have any info on his home setup?
ie. was it mentioned in a guitar mag interview or anything?
