I play in a small band... weve had about 10 gigs round town and I play lead, but I really wanna take my playing to a higher level... in particular soloing and blues guitar. As far as rythym goes Im sweet but as a lead player id say im still just at a beginner to intermediette level. The speed of my fingering is an area needing improvement too. Anyone have any advice as to scales, exercises, songs... anything that will help me improve and take my playing to a higher level? Also Ive been reading about pentatonic scales.. how important are these? Should I try and master these?

i suck as a soloist but learn the pentatonics. that is the basis for pretty much all blues/rock soloing.

Try to work gradually on it.For example take a solo and divide it into small phrases. Then start working on them one by one.You should try "easy" solos at first.I recommend that you find the tabs for all songs in Black Sabbath's Paranoid LP and try them first.Iommi's lead playind ain't that difficult but it's catchy as hell.Amazing guitarist...You could also try ac/dc songs...The soloing in some of them is not quite difficult....Finally you can always find some blues songs played with FINGERS and not a pick...They are the basis of blues guitar playing...I don't know where you can find them but if my teacher can that lives in Greece I guess that you can also...Try the http://www.halleonard.com/ for some books

P.S THE KEY FOR GOOD SOLOING IS TO LEARN HOW TO READ THE VALUES OF THE NOTES.YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THEM AND SING THE RHYTHM.TRY THAT IN ONE TONE AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN

In that you can find only perfect and mostly easy to play licks...One of the best blues albums ever...You can find the tabs of these I guess but it's not what I prefer to do coz there are no values in a tab...and if you wanna be accurate you'll have to know how to read and play the correct values...

  • http://www.mxtabs.net/ has some great lesson for learning how to solo. as far as the q. whether you should learn pentatonics, the answer is YES! the major scale is real important too.speed and coordination will come over time (i know you dont wanna hear that last bit, but you do need to practice a lot, you will thank yourself for it!)

    good luck and have fun!
