Scale technique

Hi
A few questions regarding scales... Im practicing scales and stuff but I got a few bad habits from years of self teching... I just dunno if I should be trying to unlearn them, so any advice would help. Firstly when practicing scales I find myself baring strings 1 - 3 with my finger rather than moving my finger from each indivdual string... is this a problem? Also I hold my pick with my thumb, pointer finger and middle finger... this causes my hand to be more clenched.. should I try and start holding the pick in the more conventional way? Thanks

  • Actually, for a change of pace, I would try to do the scales with each individual finger without barring the frets. Put the minimum pressure on the strings that needs to be. This makes it much easier on your fingers. It's cool to barre the strings too, but for lead playing it's good to know both.

With the picking hand, try this: Curl your fingers a bit and put your pick between your thumb and the side of your curled up index finger. Keep your wrist and thumb parallel to the strings so that your wrist isn't curved. I don't even rest my hand on anything unless I'm damping the strings, just rest your elbow on the guitar and use that as a pivot. Stay conscious of your wrist so it is relaxed as possible and use your forearm and just a little bit of a flick of the wrist to pick the note. This gives you really efficient motion and can prevent tendonitis later, and you can really go fast!
( I know that's hard to explain without seeing it, but it works)

    good luck
