Active pick ups

Whats the difference between Active pick ups and normal pick ups? Any preference or major tone/sound difference between the 2?

    Active pickups have higher output. I don't use them because they are a low impedence signal, which is fine if you go into a wah, delay, chorus, amp or something. But if you use fuzz pedals, it will sound like shit. I have a Fulltone '70 and a Zvex Octane III and neither will work with actives. They're good for a high gain signal (metallica uses them) but you can get high output passives and make everything happy. (megadeth and pantera use passives, so they can still drive the shit out of anything)
