Live 8- McCartneys drummer

Just watching live 8 yesterday and McCartneys drummer had this electronic like box he was holding up to his hear in between songs... any ideas what is would be?

    I'd venture to guess a metronome.

    i thought it might be that, but ive never seen one used before... do many drummers use these?
