Great news. Canada is slashing its order of F-35 fighters from 88 to not more than 32. It will re-invest the billions saved to purchase 60 or more Swedish Saab Gripen E/F-39's. The USA is no longer a trustworthy ally. Canada will be focussing its accelerated military investments on partnerships with European and South Korean allies. You can thank Trump for awakening Canada to the fact that the USA cannot be trusted.
I guess the question is, from here, does the world try to replace these cooperative agreements between nations, or does everyone follow the isolationist approach the States have pivoted to?

So when Russia or china attacks Canada they will want Sweden to defend them? Good luck.

well, they would be the go to for artic warfare.

if you read the post, canada are buying their planes and not ours which had costvover runs , questionable crashes and arent exactly the multi-platform fighter dod wanted.

Moreso taken aback by the anti American comments in your post. Sure I am not a fan of Donnie, but that doesn’t mean every conservative idea is a bad one.

As the arctic continues to melt, Canada will have its hands full holding that TRADE ROUTE with Russia and china, and to think they will not need American help is absurd. Also there is conservative concern that the USA should have full influence on all trade Atlantic to pacific to Asia, that there should be no gap between Alaska and Seattle.

What does Panama Greenland and Canada have in common, key transit point in that route? But try to discuss with Canada and you get mocked by our far more intelligent neighbors.

    ..
interesting from that cbc article “ Miller also addressed online misinformation that suggested the F-35s have a so-called "kill switch" that could turn off aircraft belonging to allies — or hobble their capabilities, should the U.S. government order the company to do so.

you know, having raised my hand to serve this nation in the United States Navy,  I will fully excercise my 1st amendment right and say whatever the fuck I want about this president and this country. fuck all what you think , believe or otherwise hold dear. I raised my hand so untold others could do the same.

I said I was taken aback by your anti American comments. I did not question your right to say it. If anything, leftists on this forum attack anything and everything that does not fit into their leftist mantra.

For example, I do not support trumps annexation ambitions, but it’s worth discussing politely and intelligently. Something that seems to be impossible on this forum.

*Above, you completely ignored the substance of my comment to attack me the poster. this is not how AMT is supposed to operate, but it does, repeatedly and predictably.. Wonder why.

one, I am a centrist at heart. registered independent in 88 and stayed that way until 16.voted split tickets until 18 which was the last time. straddle the right/left line depending on subject.

I didnt address the kill switch possibility because there are other more tanglible and provable issues with that aircraft that should  give any nation pause before buying from the private companies who build them. to buy eleswhere does not harm our security in the slightest. it does fuck with profit.

THAT is one way to have these monied interests reign fuckstick and his ilk in.

my expression of not caring a whit about you , your thoughts or your feelings isnt a personal attack. It simply makes me an American. No? Arent we great again?

Canada is the number one buyer of orange juice/orange juice concentrate made by American farmers (Florida orange farmers basically rely on Canada).

Now Canada is just buying its OJ from Brazil. Look at that chart. So many people are going to lose everything because of a petty tyrant's ill advised trade war.

I don't quite understand how you can talk about Palestinians as though they are a monolith with the same values and desires as Hamas (and some very negative associated terms), when they clearly have not had a democratic election since Hamas' election, and then look at the amount of Americans who elected and re-elected Trump, and claim that their ethos radically differs from his. I'm politely asking the difference between casting all Palestinians in the shadow of Hamas, and casting many Americans in the shadow of Trump. I'm really not so concerned with the Middle East at this point - in my heart of hearts, I believe it to be a problem with no solution - but I think applying different standards to different cohorts is a serious problem in debate these days.

Canada drops a $13B contract with the US for F-35 fighter jets, they will instead go for European jets that can be produced in Canadian factories, not only will this bring jobs to Canada but it will also put the country in the European bloc

Washington responded with anger saying that this could damage the special relationship between the two

I dont think theres anything special with an abusive relationship. Time for Canada to break up with USA and date us kinder and more stable Euros 🇨🇦💘🇪🇺

Damage the special relationship between the US and Canada??? At any point does this administration recognize the utter bullshit that they spew? Our dip shit president has been trying to destroy it since before the election.

Welp, I'm looking at my retirement savings for tax purposes and see that last year, January 1st through December 31, 2024, my annual rate of return for my 401K was +17.2% Year to date since this January, -3.51%. My IRA has lost $14K since the start of the year. Happy days are here again! Thanks COOTWH, this is your economy.

I mean the market pullback after last years gains aren't earth shatteringly bad.   The annoying part is that it's due to policy that will most likely slow down the economy.  I think 4% is a laugh, if these policies really backfire, we might see a real downturn.

It's just bullshit because the GOP will criticize the market ups and downs based on normal market movements when Dems are in office...but when their moron actually does stupid shit that causes this shit they try to explain it away.

Does the 17% tariff assessed to Israel apply to arms sales? And where’s Ukraine? How about Yemen? Saudi oil included?

I hope you meant trump and not that commenter. I saw this elsewhere and am impressed someone figured out the math behind the tariffs.

To me it’s clear what trump is trying to do with the tariffs, create a back door sales tax/flat tax. This will pay for the huge income tax breaks for the wealthy coming soon.

replacing income tax with a sales tax based on consumption would be a huge redistribution of wealth away from the blue class workers he is pretending to care about. The next step he will release the enormous tax cut for wealthy earners and the Dems could be flat footed again.

my passion on this topic is , “will the Dems be smart enough to figure this out and have a clear message.” Dems can not fight everything. It is difficult to get a clear message to those in the middle who have outsized power shaping our future. If Dems want to focus on the “other topics” that they seem more passionate about….that could lose this debate in the public view. It’s important shape the class warfare debate being used against them currently with skill (because they have yet to identify this point loud enough to be heard).

I'm feeling like buying concert tickets and travel/hotel is not a place I should be spending $ with this shit show
If you've committed, commit and really have fun. but definitely evaluate spending for the near future otherwise.

Committed but all refundable. Only going to 2 shows but it seems irresponsible as my retirement slowly trickles away and my HOA goes up, etc etc etc. I"m 60 and earning potential limited

At the start of his term by one year was somewhere in the neighborhood of Plus 18% as late as last week or the week before that it dropped to plus 11 point something.

Year to date was in the neighborhood of + 8% at the start of his term

am late to the 401k party. losses seem heavy(they are) because I have an aggressive portfolio for my age. target date fund matures in 10 yrs.  am in 3 separate blackrock index funds as well.

when shit is good seeing VERY good returns there.

so gotta take the hits when they come. in a month we get our annual raise. theres an automatic 1% increase in 401k deposits pre-tax. not going to change that like yrs past. in fact may bump it by 1 more % .....

will prob see it to my advantage come tax time next year. not hopeful there will be significant gains under this "great business man"

I'm thinking the fate of the markets is going to be tied to whether or not global tariff's stick, and if they don't stick how long they do stick around for.

If they dig their heels in on this, I think it's going to cause a pretty significant recession.  On the other hand if they magically life or drastically reduce them.... they could pop back the other way.  No idea what's going to happen.
