We really should talk about this.
Pretty much everything (and then some) that I've thought about for some time about this subject is all right here.  And you don't have to be religious, or you can be any number of religions to appreciate this.  For me, it's great content, excellent delivery.  Right on.

separation of church and hate is hard when hate is one of the main components of christian nationalism.

Yeah, in fact I would define Christian Nationalism as "hate".
But I also do not equate Christian Nationalism with Christianity.  Though I haven't read it yet, I think that's the major premise of Fugelsang's book, and I'm really looking forward to reading it.
Though I don't consider myself "religious", my parents were both dedicated people of faith who walked the walk.  They came to be people who believed in love, kindness, giving, tolerance, and peace.  They would have been appalled by the Christian Nationalists as I am.  I will say, Christian Nationalists certainly are a challenge to my efforts to not be hateful myself.  But the nature of their beliefs- I can't see that as being anything other than disgusting, vile, and evil.

The so-called "Christian" nationalists are no more Christian than a clump of dirt.
They believe and spew a vile vitriol based wholly on fear, hate, ignorance, jealousy, and lies.
Jesus loved and cared for EVERYONE.
He would be ashamed of these so-called "christians."

also they live by selected parts of the bible and throw out all the stuff that they don't like. especially most of the stuff jesus actually said. i am sure fugelsang's book will cover all of that. one of the things he says a lot on his radio show is "you cannot love donald trump and be a follower of jesus christ."

This is what shocked and disappointed me in the primaries for Trump's first run.  How quickly they supported someone who lived his life so against their beliefs.

I will say though, if you believe that abortion is murder, how can you vote for a Democrat and be a Christian?    I will cut them some slack on this, but they don't need to be so gung ho in love with Trump.

in the bible, Jesus never once mentioned abortion.

i am sure fugelsang will discuss this in his book too. he does on his radio show all the time. he says it is one of the things that does not hold water when talking about christian nationalists. they are putting words in Jesus' mouth relating to abortion, because he did not mention it once in the gospels.

Bingo.  This is another point Fugelsang makes- that Christian Nationalists are prone to arguing for shit that's not even in the Bible, the most blatant being naming the time when the so-called rapture (a word that no where to be found in the Bible) is supposed to happen, and the event itself is an interpretation of some weird even written about in the most drug addled book in the Bible: The Book of Revelation (OK, I can't prove that about the drugs, lol!)

Funny how it evolved from the King James Version to The New Revised Standard version to The American Standard Version to The New American Fascist Version.  Yikes!

I am pretty religious. I attend church regularly. Most of my family and many of my friends are as well. I can't name one single person that takes anyone seriously who claims to know when the second coming is.

Regardless of religion though, if one feels strongly that abortion is murder, and they vote for a candidate that supports abortion, isn’t that similar to voting for Trump in spite of his behaviors that don’t align with your beliefs?

What is the person to do?  Not vote for either candidate?

Yeah, I agree. I think it's completely irrelevant that it wasn't discussed. People can't form their own thoughts? As long as Jesus didn't teach against it, I don't see how it matters as it pertains to your religion.
Jesus didn't speak against slavery either. Should Christians start advocating for that too?

Leviticus 25:39-46 gives laws on slavery.

Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus said he’s enforcing the laws.

Seems Christians should have slaves. The Confederacy agreed.

The second one is a little out of context. He didn't say enforce, he said "fulfill," as in he's the promised one.
The Old Testament also allows rape, incest, concubines and polygamy. He's not enforcing those laws either.

I mean, yeah? I wouldn't expect people who feel that way to vote Democrat, but I don't see how any self-respecting person can vote for Trump no matter how they feel about abortion. I mean, Trump's policy to end USAID alone will kill about 14 million people, many of them children. So if they care about not killing babies, voting for Trump would definitely go against their beliefs. That would mean they have to choose not to vote.

This thread is about Christian Nationalism.  There are already several threads about abortion:

    Fair enough.
