I tentatively booked both Doubletree and the Marriot (which is literally right next to the arena).  I'll read a bunch of reviews but can anyone here provide any insight?

Also, I never even been to Pitt.  Any recommendations?!?!  My wife and I typically like bars or speakeasys, dining spots, and anything unique to the local area.

    Thanks!

hotels are hotels are hotels...don't you read Hotels.com or google? They are just hotels....Downtown pitts is pretty small in that you can walk from the Renaissance to the arena in 20 min too. So no hotel is too far away.
  • the marriott is fine but dated.  the Westin is better but not so much better than the marriott that it defeats the location.  If you're looking for the nicest hotel downtown, I'd go with either Hotel Monaco or the Fairmont. Omni William Penn is very upscale but also, again, quite dated.  Fairmont is much more modern, and Hotel Monaco is new but in a classic style.

However, for good things to do or eat, downtown isn't really the best option.  don't get me wrong, there are good places to eat downtown, but I would look for places in the Strip District or Lawrenceville (which is about a mile away from downtown) instead.  Bar scene is better in those areas as well.  If you're staying the whole weekend I'd recommend a trip to shadyside (another neighborhood) as well--Noodlehead is the best Thai street type food in the city, and it's super cheap.  cash only (or at least they used to be).

Primanti Brothers is a the typical tourist recommendation, but I really would not go there other than if you feel you have to say you did it.  Eddie V's is a good restaurant downtown. Altius and Monterrey Bay on Mt. Washington are great restaurants with great views.  Pusadee's Garden in Lawrenceville is very good--also Thai but much more expensive. Commoner has good Sunday brunch; Pamela's is also a famous local breakfast spot--but I prefer DeLuca's in the Strip District.
  • If you're looking for wings I'd recommending The Tap Room, which is located in the Omni William Penn. Super, duper good wings (not a ton of flavor options but great execution).

A few areas to look into: Mt. Washington (Awesome view of the city. Grandview Ave, Shiloh St.) The Strip District (Smallman St., Penn Ave.) Shadyside (Walnut St.).  Plenty of things to do, eat and drink in these areas.

Cannot disagree more.  Some hotels have bed bugs, or a non functioning AC, or cannot accomadate as much parking as they advertise, etc.

God forbid I ask for info in a forum for the band I'll see!

I stayed in the Marriot back before COVID. I don't remember much about it, which means it was fine. I only remember the shitty hotels (I'm talking to you Doubletree in Camden). The Marriot is an easy downhill walk to a cool downtown area and PNC Park. Too bad there's no baseball that weekend.

I am staying at the Doubletree in Pitt this time because when I booked last night, the Doubletree was less expensive for the 4 night stay. And  for the free cookie.

Just went to DMB couple weeks ago. Here is a pano picture of arena and where we stayed in condo which was down sidewalk across street from arena and same building on corner as Marriott behind red church. Staying here again. Also walkable to downtown area.
Hoping they have better sound than DMB.  I’ve been to a couple other shows at PPG including PJ and don’t remember there being an issue with the sound but the DMB concert was the worst sounding concert I’ve ever been to.

I might make the trip for this. Pirates are in town starting Monday so I can check PNC off my list.

Lawrenceville is a good neighborhood for drinks and food. Gooski’s in Polish Hill for Saturday night.

It’s an easy drive for Cleveland, Columbus, and Buffalo.
Dennis Rodman stole my seat N1 @ PJ20.
U.S. Summer shows for the teachers, please.
I’m tired of driving to Chicago. Play Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, or Buffalo.
