Okay, fishing for opinions while we are finalizing these songs. biggest one i'm looking for opinions on is "let go" musically i thing i need to build into the distortion part and then also extend it until the song fades down slower at the end.... just something off so far.

the first one is a song i wrote music to and never had anything lyrically. so brian wrote the words that dealt with his friend moving to california and hanging himself in his bathroom. its probably the most "beautiful" song musically i have put together in my time writing. by that i mean musically one i got to sit back and really concentrate on since i only sing in chorus'

the vocals are throw away vocals and will be replaced, of course. Brian sings on this and i help in the chorus. oh and the weird echo effect on his voice wont be there either... our engineer was being creative again.......

song 1: "Manis" (c) 2003 eoto

Manis
music:dm lyrics:bw

"when the vision surrounded you
did you close your eyes? or were they wide open?
an ocean of feeling drown your mind
did you sink into the dark?

when you crossed that line
and you took your life-- did you think about "why"?
did you throw it out to sea
did you give up on me?
--
You couldnt wait to get out of here
this world was dragging you down
feeling alone with no one at home
i know we werent always around
but no one knew the pain inside
would drive you to take your own life...
--

now its turning colder, light is slipping from your eyes
lifetime of memories-- slowly fading by
dont try to fight it now--close your eyes and hold on tight
take with you what you were given--and hold on tight
it's too late.. it's already done.
you cannot change the past, its done...
wish i could take this away... ..........
-
You couldnt wait to get out of here
this world was dragging you down
feeling alone with no one at home
i know we werent always around
but no one knew the pain inside
would drive you to take your own life...
-
when the vision surrounded you did you close your eyes?

or were they wide open.........."

sounds good. Low. I can tell you like the new delay and Tubescreamer.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

    Which delay would that be?

    i think he bought a DD-6.
  • yeah i own a DD-6 but truth be told i used the Roland Delay calculated to the timing of the beats per minute in the song. hehe. its built into the 24 track recorder that we used to record it.

the software is pretty tight. I did, however use the od9 maxon Tube Screamer for both songs. good stuff. thanks for checking out the songs.

  • oh but the delay does help with the swells i did in the 3:49 + area of the song. gives them that haunting sound.

the dd-6 is a good pedal though. i have to set it as close as i can live on the warp mode. mainly because you can get creative and do a large volume swell at the end of a song for fun. kind of Binaural-esque delay swells mike would throw in at the end of a song.

  • Sounds good lowlight.

    I like it,

A feedback note or 2in the background, or an e bow would sound cool, but then those guys will be having you buy more toys!

    Nice guitar playing there, too

  • thanks, WP. yeah I want to keep this song kind of in that dynamic area. where almost less is more (although i do miss my old EBow I gave away when i sold my les paul!!! and this song probably would have had it in it). i have my little distortion fit in the middle with the swells and such hehe. i just liked the picking and build out of that with the acoustic and clean electric. i think it worked well with the emotion of the song without taking anything away from the vocals and such.

i cant wait till we finish it and actually do the real vocals and backups. along with some very lazy counter timing tamborine slaps hehe. god i love making music.

  • Yeah, I'm definitely a less is more type of person,
The space between the notes says as much as the notes

    On "Manis":

The delay on the vocal seems a bit strong. The acoustic guitar... is that direct into the board, or mic'ed? Kick drum is a bit low... just a bit. With the delayed guitar, a stereo-bounce delay might be a nice trick (left, to right, to center, to left, to right, etc). Rhythm instruments seem panned to one side... the piano and electric guitar. Gives a low-mid pan to one side, and leaves the acoustic all alone on the other. I'd maybe separate the electric guitar and the piano. The vocal seems awefully "S"-y... maybe a de-esser?

Anyways, I'm being totally hyper-critical here. I think it sounds great, very tight and full. The acoustic guitar tone seems thin, and the panning of the electric guitar and piano is a bit odd. Other than that, I really like it. I'll give the other track a listen...
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

Let go is cool. Kind of makes me think of the ocean at the beginning with the cymbal sheen in the background. If I wanted to be really critical I'd say I'd like the bass to be a little tighter and more clearly defined, but you know I like bass. Vocals sound good too.

    On "Let Go":

Pan the acoustic center for the intro, then move it off to one side. Pan the piano off to the other side a bit more. There's a big hole in the opposite side of the mix from the acoustic. The ride cymbal comes thru a bit hot, and it's a bit thin, too. The drums fall out of the mix when the electric guitar comes in. They come back at the end when the electric goes away, so it's just that part. Maybe a bit more bottom-end to the kick drum.

Like I said, I'm being hyper-critical... I'm mixing an album right now, too, so I've been listening too hard to just about everything. I like this one, too... the middle section is sort of unexpected. That Maxon sure sounds good on this one!
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
  • thanks guys. yeah i know what you mean with the panning and shit. the good thing is that i am still going to lay in a second acoustic with some picking and overall build for the song on Let Go. also im going to let the distortion keep going until the very end where it really gets slow again.... i think it needs it.

as for manis... yeah the echo on the vocals was done by our engineer as a last minute thing just toying around.

seriously thats the kind of feedback i was looking for. thanks you two.

im going to take it to heart on the final mix and cut.

we still have to record the vocals and tamborine/shaker parts.

  • oh yeah i know the Middle of Let Go is a kick in the teeth... i think i need to have a muted build into it right before to cushion the blow...

You can only shoot them three months out of the year.

    Is this a trick question?

wow low!!!! that song is just beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    can really feel it....awesome!!!!!!!

    uh...can't stop listening to it...:D
  • hey low, is "manis" set in stone? It sounds great, but maybe more of a duet could sound cooler. I dig the song overall, it is very moving.
  • manis is NOT set in stone - they will be going back and Low will be matching vocals with Brian -

everything you have heard is a rough idea of what they are heading from with the final mix - there are still things missing - the songs are gonna be great -

    keep your eyes peeled

    hope i didn't overstep, Low...

  • hehe, nah thanks radio. couldnt have said it better..

yeah i was thinking swaping vocals is weird so I'm going to double his vocals... so its not a stark contrast from the rest of the album

    squirel- thanks :)

mikeM- yeah thats what i was wanting is a contructive critique. thanks :)

Paco- oh about the bassline... well he uses his KORG for bass... and it has this vibrato on it so its kinda wavering.... and not really tight...
