Make sure there aren't any cracks anywhere, the tuners look tight and turn smoothly. Strings and heads can be replaced easy.

There's always the 6-string banjo, too.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

  • What to look for in a used banjo?
    Fingerprints! :D

Other than that, the neck joints are sometimes loose where they meet the body,, otherwise, most parts are replacable.

For a hundred bucks,,, get it.
Banjos are a lot of fun,,, but you're so right,,, whenever I sit down with one,, that's like the default song! The Deliverance song, then kick into the Beverly Hillbillies theme song!

Do you happen to know the brand? Is it a 5 string or a tenor (4 string). Both are fun. Any 5 string is worth more than a hundred unless there's something drastically wrong. Sometimes WAY more than a hundred. If it says Mastertone on it,,,, giver her cash right away!

i'm not even going to think about looking at it until i get paid in eight days. my friend has no idea what it's worth -- it was given to her by a friend to sell. so i'm guessing it's a good deal.
