What I would've used for this would have been a Marshall amp turned WAY up, and an overdrive pedal like a tubescreamer or a something like that. Then for the woo woo woo pulsing would be a Uni Vibe, which is like Jimi Hendrix used.
Most of it, though is pure loud tube amp and aggressive playing. Difficult to achieve in a bedroom.
Some of those other guys may know exactly what they used.
Impressive that someone named who's pearljam has pearljam cd's!:D
Cool,, you're a guitar player?

Also, it's a Cry Baby wah wah pedal and not a Vox, someone said.
Mike and Stone are both Cry Baby users, that's right.
Well, my neighbor's DEFINITELY must know I'm back from Africa now!
After some testing down in the "Bob Testing and Research Center" with my brother's 100 watt Marshall, I have come to this conclusion:
Straight Marshall 100 watt on 7 and a half, a standard Jimmy Page setting.
A little overdrive, like tubescreamer. Actually didn't even need that.
And a univibe during the solo.
And a Pilsner Urquell beer.
Five Against One,,,Do you live at home? You might want to wait till your parents are out before you try this:D
Maybe on the live stuff they used something different, but that's what was on the ten cd

Settings for "Back in Black," AC/DC
Yeah, about that divebombing effect on "I Don't Live Today".... so Jimi's using a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz, a Vox wah, a Univibe...a....a......a......
Standard warmup!
I don't have an arbiter, But plenty of other ones though, and I'll bet you anything that with the marshall cranked, none can tell the difference between a Vox and a crappy scratchy old Dunlop Wah.
Especially in my music room!
Well maybe Bill and Mary down the street can!:D

I didn't see this last night. I WAS using my 68 SG!
Here's the setting: Pilsner---> Bob
>SG
>Marshall on 7.5!
Five Against One, if you read this,,,, thanks for asking about the song. I had fun last night!
Basically, to answer your question,,, ( I had to look back to see what the question was!)
I don't know what kind of amp you have, but a little overdrive and hard playing is most of it. If you have a wah wah pedal, or a chorus pedal or effect, you could give it a little "woo woo" sound. Unless you have a univibe.
Cool that you're playing!

I don't know,, I have no explanation for my behavior in that statement.

I guess you mean into the break?
This is the way I would do it: B F# B F#, Then A D A D B E B E
barre a "B" at the 2nd fret, then move your index finger to the irst fret on the d string (Eb) then barre an F# (2nd fret) for the lead,
Kind of like X-2-4-4-4-X to X-X-1-4-4-X to 2-4-4-X-X-X
Play the middle 4 strings A7 (X-0-2-0-2-X) then X-0-2-0-0-X then X-X-0-2-3-X
Then Barre the 2nd fret play B7 using the same pattern above with your ring and little finger.
I guess there's tab around, but I never use that stuff, and they may play it differently, but on one run through, that's what I got.
I imagine the PJ experts will be able to elaborate!
( cool thread,,, this is the first time I ever played a PJ song I think. Maybe Betterman.) They're a pretty good band.
