Ranking Live Dark Matter Songs

pjhawkspjhawks Posts: 12,566
I did 4 shows, Chicago 2, 2 Philly shows and Boston 1. Heard everything but Got to Give from Dark Matter.  Here is my ranking of the Live Dark Matter songs.  How do you rank them?

1 - Upper Hand - Got on a kick of this song before the shows and thought it was great live
2 - React, Respond - honestly one of my least favorites on the album but kicked ass live
3 - Running - great tempo for a live show
4  - Setting Sun - One of the best on the album, think they struggled a bit finding the right place for it in the live show but still was great
5 - Waiting for Stevie - another one that didn't do a lot for me on the album but was much better live to me
6 - Won't Tell - my favorite on the album, pretty good but not super live
7 - Scared of Fear - 7th but still damn good live
8 - Dark Matter - This song never did much for me, little better live but not the biggest fan of the song
9 - Wreckage - love it on the album, but very similar to I am Mine for me in that it's a song that is just ok live but great on the album
10 - Something Special - i get the sentiment is nice but ehh not feeling it live.

NA - Got to Give -

All DM songs sounded great live.

But one song stood out clearly, and that's Waiting For Stevie.  I really felt that one.

Interestingly, Wreckage was a top live track for me but my least favorite song on the album.  I think the beautiful guitars stood out and the song has a more raw sound live.  The polished pop vocals on the album version throw me off.

Also, interestingly, React/Respond is my favorite album track, but the live version loses a bit of shine for me.  Specifically the guitar outro shred.  Still love it alot, but prefer the album version on this one.

TL;DR:  All songs sounded great live.  WFS and Wreckage stood out as sounding better live.  R/R I prefer the album version.  Can't wait to hear Got To Give live!

I've attended 8 shows this tour (Vegas, LA, Seattle, CHI)

    1. Dark Matter
    2. Setting Sun
    3. Scared Of Fear
    4. Running
    5. Wreckage
    6. React, Respond
    7. Stevie
    8. Upper Hand
    9. Won't Tell
    10. Something Special

Dark Matter is not my favorite song, but the crowds know it, and it maintains the energy level of the set (and sometimes kicks it up a notch or two).
Running was one of my least liked songs on the record, but live it kicks ass.
I want to like Waiting for Stevie more. To me it feels similar to Amongst the Waves - they both have ingredients of a great PJ song, but just seem to (slightly) miss on some level live.

I attended ten shows and saw all eleven songs live. I'd go:

    1) "Scared of Fear" (knocked out of the park every time)
    2) "Wreckage" (a truly great song executed beautifully)
    3) "React, Respond" (always kept the energy going after "Scared of Fear")
    4) "Running" (so fun; love the moment when the guitars kick in near the end)
    5) "Upper Hand" (solid; didn't like that Ed sometimes left off the last few lines of lyrics)
    6) "Got to Give" (not really sure where to rank this; it's my favorite song on the album but, hearing it only once almost five months ago, I don't really have much of an impression of how it was live, so I'm just placing it in the middle)
    7) "Dark Matter" (I loved this live for about the first five shows, but it was becoming less interesting by the last five shows)
    8) "Won't Tell" (one of my favorites on the album; enjoyed it live, but less than I would have expected given how much I enjoy the song on the album)
    9) "Setting Sun" (this song started resonating with me more recently, but all of the performances I saw were in May, so I didn't experience the full impact of it live)
    10) "Something Special" (I really like this song, but Ed seemed to always be reading the lyrics off the Teleprompter)
    11) "Waiting for Stevie" (I'm just not the fan of this song that many others here are)
I gather speed from you fucking with me.
