Kelly Slater: A Life of Waves
Author Kelly Slater and Todd Glaser, Foreword by Eddie Vedder
A revealing, photographic portrait of 11-time world champion Slater, one of the greatest and most admired surfers in the world.
Glaser’s extensive archive of stunning images—a vast majority of which are previously unseen—is a riveting compilation of some of the best and most iconic images of Kelly Slater in and out of the water. High-action shots of Slater doing what he does best in the vibrant hues of the best waves in the world, in the South Pacific, Australia, Hawaii, California, and Europe, Glaser’s photographs immerse us in the power of the ocean and awaken our thirst for exploration.
This collection celebrates fifteen years of Slater’s exhilarating adventures, from 2008 to 2023: Slater's most iconic surf sessions including the first-ever wave ridden at his Surf Ranch, as well as behind-the-scenes shots inside Slater’s home, from his famous morning pancakes to strumming guitar with his friends.
With personal narration by Slater throughout, this book offers a seldom-seen portrait of surfing’s brightest star in his element, guided by Glaser’s irrefutable passion for his craft.

Aside from Glaser’s gorgeous images and the quotes that bring the reader into the photos, the book also includes one of the most touching forewords I’ve ever read. It comes from Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder, who is a long-time friend of Kelly’s and a fan of surfing. The way it came about, much like the book itself, was organic. And the way it is presented in the book is perfectly in sync with the personal feeling Glaser’s photos convey. It’s handwritten in Vedder’s scrawling penmanship, 10 pages long, and complete with a simple painting of Kelly.
“We were on a surf trip together and we were telling Eddie about the project,” Glaser said. “Kelly and I were like, ‘man, it would be so cool to ask Eddie to write the forward for the book.’ So we just asked him, like, ‘Hey Eddie, we would be so honored if you would write the foreword to this book project.’ We were working on it while we were on the surf trip, and Eddie was like, ‘oh man, I would be so stoked. Like, ‘thank you, that’s so cool.’ He was really genuinely excited to participate.”

Eddie Vedder wrote the foreword. What’s it like hanging out in the presence of gods in their respective fields? Have you become immune to being starstruck?
Eddie is one of the kindest, most genuine, surf stoked people I’ve ever met not to mention an incredible songwriter and musician. He and Kelly have been friends for a long time and from the first time I met Eddie, we bonded immediately over our passion for surfing. He loves it. He’s a good surfer too! A lot of his songs were written about surfing or while he was in the water. I couldn’t imagine how busy it must be to be on tour, we were just at a Pearl Jam show last weekend and those fans, his fans, the bands fans are the most dedicated fans I’ve ever seen. We met people who had been to 40, 50, some of them 100 shows!
Eddie, Kelly and I been on a few surf missions together and they’re always trying different boards and looking for ways to improve. Kelly and Eddie are very similar in their approach to what they do best, they are eternal students always looking to improve or think of new ways to approach something they may be very familiar with all in the name of maximising fun.
