Q: About one of Eddie's Guitars

My 10 year old son is on a mission to find out what kind of guitar Eddie used on SNL. It's the black & white electric w/circles and an arrow. Any or all info. would be appreciated. He's also curious as to if Eddie designed (decorated) it himself, whether those are decals, or paint, etc., or he has someone do that for him. Not my area of expertise -- I just love the music.

--Thanks

upon further review of the tape, the arrow appears to be just electricians tape, and i have no idea what kind of guitar it is, but i think ed would have done that himself, i cant see him saying to someone, "arrow and a circle, thats what i want for the snl show"

(its okay if you dont even have a son and just want to make your guitar like that, i understand.)

We had a thread post-SNL dissecting every bit of gear we could identify, as it was the first time seeing the boys live in awhile.

Its a Fender Telecaster with a P-90 pickup in the neck postion, not sure on the color of it, as some of it looks all sparkly. Not sure if the arrow and circle are tape or marker, but I think its Ed's way of saying, The Who sticker would go there. He had the RAF bullseye sticker on his Teal SG during the 2003 tour. I have a sticker just like it (Thanks Dunkman!) but just can't bring myself to stick it on my axe, a Teal SG as well.

indeed, and customized a bit, I assume he probably has a Lindy Fralin P90 installed because that's whats in the Gibson SG.

Works fine. How the hell did you take that picture so close?

As for the guitar: that bulls eye and the arrow look very tinkerish. Probably just Ed messing around with it.

so is the p90 put in place of another pickup like the lipstick style? I assume you would have to bore out the space to fit it? Is that hard?

It might actually have the space in the body anyway, since the pickups mount to the pickguard, so you'd just need a new pickguard. If it did need body routing, leave it to the pros.

I know my strat, despite having all single coils, has body routing for a humbucker in the bridge, and possibly the neck.

My dad got his HB taken out and a P-90 put in his tele. He had to make the hole slighly wider and put a new pickgaurd on. Sounds awesome!

Don't know if you ever noticed but Ed's had this guitar for a long time now, but it's only the first time he plays it live... You can see it on the inside picture of the No Code album.

That's not the same guitar, note the maple board. Ed's guitar is actually finished in "black sparkle" too, the plain black parts appear to be covered in tape.

I couldn't access the link, but it could be the same guitar, just need to change the neck...

Fenders are good like that. Mix and match parts. I read somewhere that Eric Clapton assembled his famous "Blackie" Strat from the parts of three different guitars.

It was something like 5. He bought 5, then took the best parts from each, gave the leftovers to friends (including George Harrison).

He bought six for like $100 a pop, gave one each to George Harrison, Pete Townshend and Steve Winwood, and took the remaining three and built Blackie. According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackie
