noise canceling headphones

anyone ever use these before and if so, can you use them the same as you woulod earplugs- to just knock out the outside noise but not liisten to music? my husband wants some for studying. and I think to tune me out:D

    Targus PA605U Noise Reduction Headphones for $10.

    I guess they don't completely cancel the noise, though.

    Shure makes the best, and the cheaper ones are still over $100. Bose makes really nice ones as well, but you'll spend over $250. Sony has a couple models, but they are pretty terrible IMO.
