As I posted a little earlier, my band cut our first real demo a couple days ago. Tell me what you think. I already know who we sound like Nirvana. Oh well. I've only been playing guitar for 1.5 years.

This was a Fender Strat with Seymour Duncan SH-4 into a Shannon O/D into a Sovtek Mig - 50 into Avatar 4x12 w/ Celestion Vintage 30's.

So basically, Guitar > Shannon > Sovtek > Celestion. Not bad, huh eric?

    that ain't a bad rig a'tall for a 1.5yr old guitarist.

I pretty much like those songs in the exact opposite order of the way they appear on the screen:

    fish grease
    pornstar
    empty
    stalker

i think the vocals have their best quality on fish grease, and the song sounds the most fully realized. the clean vocals at the beginning are particularly nice.

pornstar sounds good as well, but just not quite as original sounding as fish grease.

empty & stalker have some similar sounding guitar tones.
i realize you're only working with one OD pedal and otherwise the same tone going into everysong ... but the kind've dry palm muted sound, with light distortion, heavily augmented by the bass ... it just sound a little tired between the two songs.

i was also seriously waiting for a breakdown or some bitch ass of a solo stuck in somewhere...

oh, there was a bit of a semi-acapella moment on fish grease ... kudoz for that ...
but the guitar panned hard to the right in the intro was a bit much ...

    just my bullshit opinion.

not bad at all, i reckon.
but throw me a bone with a solo and some feedback somewhere...

i'd definately scruff it up with MORE distortion and feedback ...
    mmm. yummy.

    ;)
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?
  • thanks for the words.

i also noticed the right pan on porn star, that should be fixed tomorrow. i wish i could play solos but i haven't gotten there yet. just being in a band because it is fun at this point. i'm going to re-record the vocals for stalker tomorrow. they are weak. my favorites are porn star and fish grease, just like you. the rest of the band and the engineer loved stalker, so they won. it was first. go figure.

great rig you have there. Sounds good. Obviously you guys are AIC fans. :D

I'd love to see you add something behind the shannon as a number 2. A rat would probably sound great in that set up as a number 2 and give you a little more hair when you wanted it.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • Hey,

I didn't mind the right channel only guitar on pornstar at the start. Is that what you guys were talking about "paned right"?

Anyway, Fishgrease is very clean sounding,I mean, nicely produced. Sounds very professional.

Pornstar is definately the song that will bring on the Nirvana comparisons. The start of that song has Nirvana written all over it. You have a pretty interesting voice. It's pretty cool regardless of if it has the Puddle of mud/ cobain sound.

    Nice Job.

Oh, one other thing I noticed is your versus were all very short.
I miss you already, I miss you always

    my rig right now is
    korg tuner
    bypass mod crybaby
    shannon phaser
    small clone chorus
    shannon od
    modded rat
    toadworks delay

i just went barebones for the recording. when would i use the rat? during the choruses?

yes. i like that sometimes, but it is irritating if you listen with headphones. i'm going to have him do a 60/40 i think.
  • I see, 60/40 eh.

have you ever heard "whats mine is yours" by sleater kinney? That is the best use of panned 100% guitars I have ever heard. You should give it a listen if you haven't already.

have you had any singing lessons? Or did you just go for it?

  • haven't heard that song. i will today.

no singing lessons, just went for it. you can tell, right?
