Can we please see improvements to the "Ignore" function?

I'm finding that function very useful these days, but I think it could use some improving.  I have been on other forums where the "Ignore" function means I don't ever see a trace of the person I put on ignore.  They are gone for good unless I choose to go to my ignore list and put them back on visible.  What a great idea!

But on these forums, when I put someone on ignore, I still see a hazy indication of that ignored person's presence, and if someone quotes them, I see the whole thing- the ignored person and their post.  

This just doesn't make sense.  An improved ignore system here would reduce a mountain of useless and ridiculous bickering that goes on in some of these forums, particularly the currently highly toxic AMT.
