Intermission

I think the boys should think about taking an intermission between 2 sets. This works very well for many jam bands
gives them a rest, us time to catch up, pee, beer etc
It will make the shows seem longer and will maybe even add a few songs…

I experienced that for dead and co.  Unless PJ needs it, I wouldn’t want it.  Rather than take 20 minutes and stand in long food and bathroom lines, I would rather take five minutes and grab a drink/use bathroom whenever.  I don’t need to hear every last minute of every song.

I kind of appreciated it at Tool.  Left my seat about 30 seconds before the final note of the first set and had wide open beer and bathroom lines. back to my seat with about 10 minutes to spare.

    Nah keep that momentum going!

If it meant they would juggle the slow stuff around from beginning of sets and add 3 or 4 more songs then yes.

Not really needed on a 26 song set though.

it would allow them to stretch the songs a tad
ive noticed each song has gotten shorter with less improv jam
so it’s not just the number of songs that are shorter
the Break would prob add 2-4 songs plus some longer ones..
    cheers

If they wanted to do an acoustic then electric set this could work well. Otherwise feel the show could lose momentum.
Would enable them to use two "openers".

Maybe if the shows were three hours again. Not really necessary at the 2-2 1/2 mark!

I think this is an interesting idea.

Would probably be a cool idea to do for one tour but, generally, I like the continuity of a main set with an encore(s) so wouldn't want it to be an all the time thing.
  • As someone now in their 40s and playing hard rock songs in a band, we absolutely do intermissions during our regular jam nights. It blows my mind that these guys that are roughly 20 years older than me can rock out that hard for that long. Intermission would be more than OK with me :) Who knows maybe that 5 song mellow intro is the formula that will keep on working for them.

BTW speaking of older rock bands still killing it, I strongly encourage people to watch the 2019 Pneuma drum cam video from my favorite drummer Danny Carey on YouTube.. dude is close to 60 and is still on top of his game.

Agreed! I couldn't wait for the intermission, so I took a pee break during an extended song and got back before it ended. Could hear it all the way from the seat to the urinal and back though :)

works well for jambands because of the way they construct their setlists, kind of unnecessary for a rock show made up of more shorter songs that don't segue into each other or get extended

Springsteen stopped having intermissions and later even encore breaks. When you get older it gets harder to take a break and then start again. Easier to just keep going. Jam bands dont count, it dont matter if you snooze or noodle endlessly, the energy level is the same

Yeah, I think that the beer and bathroom lines would be insanely long and you would risk missing some of the show anyway.
Also, not knowing exactly when they would be coming back on stage, I wouldn't want to leave, so then I would just standing there needlessly waiting.
    I say keep it going.

I think this would be a cool way to temporarily change up the format of the shows, just like when they started doing seated encores on and off since 2004ish and the seated starts to the shows in 2022.

Do two sets of 10-12 songs each, and then an encore of 3-6 songs depending on how long the two main sets are.  Could do a really hard hitting first set, break, then a seated start to set two.  Might be a way to do 25-28 songs too.

Tool laterally has a countdown clock on the screen for when the intermission is over. Not really spontaneous, but helpful!

When I saw Journey and Def Leppard there was an intermission between bands and they had the countdown clock.  It was probably a necessity for that format with two bands.  Not a fan for Pearl Jam though.

Ed has to talk a lot between songs already.  An Intermission on top would really kill any momentum I'd think.

Yeah if there was less yak we'd still have 30 song sets but hey the band has to have a drink or a wee. Totally get it. I'm sure they have cues they give each other. Some type of head nod or code word that basically says Mike go wank on the guitar for a few minutes I'm busting to have a slash.

Tool regains momentum after their intermission so it can be done. Their tunes are longer and more aggressive too. PJ have more songs to choose from.and more moods they can set. So pretty versatile.

Tool has a very short intermission, 12 minutes, but their clever use of Danny’s drum solo afterwards maximizes the break and allows the non drummer fans a cushion to catch part of the solo while ensuring not to miss any part of the full bands second set or encore, however one wishes to characterize the last 25 minutes of their full band show.
