Don't stay in Times Square or anywhere in the immediate MSG area.  Those areas are OK for casual restaurants, but there are plenty of better options all over the city.  It depends on what type of restaurant you are looking for and what you are looking to spend.

I like Stout NYC before the show.  Great bar and good food.  Can be super crowded though.

You can go to any Pig and Whistle for good pub food.  Head outwards to 3rd ave for restaurants or head downtown by the flat iron for better eats.

    This.

Traveling around NYC, especially Manhattan, is super easy. Stay near the 1/2/3 or ACE subway lines for direct line to MSG. Use Eater or some other site to find excellent restaurants in your price range/preferred style.

Keen's Steakhouse.  One of the best steaks I've ever had. Definitely need a reservation though.

Haven’t tried Keen’s but I always enjoy Gallaghers Steakhouse.

You likely will not get a reservation for Luger's at this point. I still think it is the best but there are people that disagree.  You can also try Wolfgang's for a similar experience. If you cannot get a reservation at a particular steakhouse, you can always try eating at the bar during lunch.

Most NYC steakhouses are good if you know how to order. The only exception for me was Sparks. The apps, sides and the swordfish are better than the steak IMHO.

We hit this place after we saw Book of Mormon last months. Very cool vibe and very good, tough reservation though.

Cote is excellent, but can get expensive quickly.
