New TV?

We All BelieveWe All Believe Scarsdale, NY Posts: 593
In the market for a new one. Old living room TV, 55'', isn't big enough anymore. Going w/at least 65'', if not more.

Leaning towards an LG. My 55'' is a 6-year-old LG, and it's still fantastic, just not big enough.

Anyone buy a new large TV lately?

Thanks in advance.

The seating arrangement we're going with will have the TV mounted and elevated on the wall in the corner, 11-13 feet away from whoever is watching. The 55" is in the corner on a table at the moment, and it's viewable, but it's close. If I put that TV on the wall and elevated it, it'd be tough to see.

I went for a G-series 55'' LG (my brother said he would disown me if I went with a Samsung QLED) two years back and it is great. He also tells me I was an idiot to go for 55 and not 65 though... He himself has an 77 inch that looks... visually unpleasing size wise.

OLED > QLED (maybe Samsung has moved past QLED though in the years since I bought mine)

So stay with LG. They are the best in the biz. And cheaper than Sony who are also the best in the biz. Buy a C-series 65 inch. Or a G-series if you want to hang it flush to the wall and care about the aesthetic. (or your wife does). They are on that level of "top tier good fucking TV:s".

Obviously a Samsung The Frame has the aesthetic thing going for it also. But the TV between the frame is worse - So pick LG. But their "Once Connect" box with all cables going into a separate box instead of the TV is obviously neat (aesthetics again). Don't know if LG has copied that yet.

Sony the best?  They aren't innovative anymore.  They play catch up w everyone else.  LG was another who was always playing catchup.  I guess buy them if you can get them cheaper than a Samsung and if you don't need the latest/best tech.

Look into Hisense.  They've been making waves latelt.

Isn't Samsung (and Hinsense(?)) still pushing the duct-taped-together technology that is QLED?

Go with OLED and go with LG. If you love watching things as it is meant to be watched.

I have an older Samsung in my bedroom, love it, but the newer Samsungs don't support Dolby Vision, which seems like it makes a difference. It's down to either the LG C3 or G3. G3 gets brighter, but it looks like it won't make much of a difference with most of the content I watch. And the C3s are so much cheaper. I also need to hang it in the corner and tilt it, if that makes sense. Can't put it flat on the wall. Seems like that'll be easier to do w/the C3.

    That setup looks awesome.

One knock against my LG G....1 maybe... is the somwwhat sluggish OS. But a colleugue who has a Samsung says theirs isn't better. So I guess that is just how Smart TV:s are... The Samsung does have a sleeker looking remote (charged by sun power), I give them that.

C-series are relatively "thin" also, I think my brother is gonna hang his CX 77''

Wait what’s wrong with Samsung QLED? I got one 4 years ago, no problems so far. But I’m in the market for a new tv for another room, so I’m generally interested to know.

    In simple and general terms;

A QLED panel is always pushing light, and has to use different tricks to dampen the light when things are to be black on the screen. This causes bloom effect and things - etc on a star field in a Star Wars movie.

On an OLED panel on the other hand light/pixel can be completely off and pitch black - as in black can be black. But it can not be as bright compared to a QLED panel. So for people watching Dr Phil in the middle of a sunny day might prefer a QLED, QLED also doesn't have the problem of "burn in" of the Dr. Phil logo when you have on Dr. Phil for hours on end, which an OLED panel can have (at least in theory, nowadays the TV's should be pretty good at avoiding the issue). I never had a problem with the brightness even in daytime though with my OLED... and I imagine most QLED-owners can watch Star Wars and not feel like there are overtly blooming in the space scenes.

In general though, I have never met or seen a film enthusiast who wants to watch a movie on a QLED display over an OLED or would pick a QLED over an OLED.

Also, as We All Believe wrote Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision for HDR content (or at least used to not do it...) - because Samsung aren't that innovative.

    Instead of my incoherent writing:

But the OLED vs QLED discussion is a bit outdated. There is also Mini LED now etc.

My last was a LG OLED 65.  My current is a LG OLED 77.  My first LG developed some really bad color issues after about 5 years.  My new one is maybe 2-3 years and is great.  No issues whatsoever.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent LG and Samsung messages on Instagram, saying that I was loyal customers of both (LG TV, Samsung TV, phone, and watch), and I'd love a free TV if possible lol. They both gave me e-mail address for their marketing departments. Maybe they think that, with my 100 followers, I'm a mega-powerful influencer lolol.

Now I might pit them against each other, and tell them it's either a G3 or an S95C, and have them tell me why I should choose their respective TV.

If you go nice enough to justify it, you should find someone to properly calibrate it.

Sony will always be my default.

Just recently ordered a Samsung for the hell of switching it up and returned it after 2 days. Hated it. Mostly because it didn’t play nice with my speakers and other connections for some reason. Went back to Sony and never looked back.

Check out ones like Sony X90L. Or if you want to stick with LG the C3.

Also, check out reddit discussions. Tons more technical background on panels and such.
