Initial
construction efforts for our Elevator Modernization Project began in
September 2023 at the Space Needle for a multi-year elevator
modernization project. Construction will primarily take place off season
(September – May) over five years and work will primarily be done
overnight.
The first phase of construction will address the building modifications
necessary to accommodate the new elevator machines and cabs. Crews from
Turner Construction will work in the tower’s hoistway and machine
room/flat roof during off-hours. The Space Needle will be open to the public as normal, and this construction is approved by the City of Seattle and the Seattle Landmark Preservation Board.
The iconic golden cab elevators will be replaced, one per year.
Installation of the first new elevator will begin in September of 2024
with the first new elevator being commissioned by May 2025.
