My whole apartment was shaking in downtown Manhattan. Crazy. Wasn’t sure what was going on at first. I thought maybe some crazy construction nearby. Never would have thought of an earthquake.

My desk shook slightly in Wayland, MA. Enough for me to feel it and wonder what that was.

I woke up and as usual did a quick scan of the news and on The Guardian, the east coast earthquake was headline news.  I had to laugh- sorry- I couldn't help it.  Well, yesterday, north of us, we two earthquakes literally one minute apart at 4.6 and 4.8. We felt them, shrugged our shoulders, moved on.  Those quakes never made it anywhere near the front page news.  In fact, other than looking for it on earthquaketrack.com, I never heard any mention of it.
But of course, earthquakes in the Jersey/NYC area are rare, for sure!  So yeah, pretty big deal back there.  Welcome to our world.

Yeah, that Taiwan quake was massive.  Terrible to see those building knocked over at such a sever angle.
20 seconds for a 4.8 quake is a long shake.  Ours are usually shorter bursts at that level,  Interesting!

I talked to someone who spent time in CA and she said no earthquake she experienced felt like today's out there. We are close to epicenter, so maybe that's why. I was gardening and heard a long rumble looked at the sky thinking odd thunder? Then the ground was moving under my feet! Never felt anything like that. Really odd. Cool to experience, but a tiny peek at what the earth can do to us. A reminder...

Philly burbs here.  I definitely thought it was kind of odd compared to the other 2 I've felt around here before. I thought it was a military helicopter going over the house at first. then when i looked out my neighbor was out looking around and got like 5 texts about it.  To me the noise was more than the shake. I didn't feel a ton of shake but it was loud.   I remember one we had about 10 years ago where for sure it shook a lot, unlike this one.

Had a geology prof tell us that this fault was long overdue for a major quake. That was 30 years ago so who knows?
Interesting information on what contributes to intensity and distance of being felt. Crazy thing, this planet.

I have somewhat mixed feeling about earthquakes.  I love that a strong quake illustrates the power the Earth and perhaps confirms the concept of Gaia- that is, that the planet is a huge single entity.  Of course, I don't like it that lives are lost in major earthquakes, and I don't like that even a moderate earthquake can induce dizziness or vertigo in me.  But feeling the earth move under me is utterly awe inspiring and reminds me that we all are but a small part of something very large and grand.
