What the hell is up with the Small Town chords!

Ok, I'm a rather brand new guitarist here (I can only play Long Road, thats with skipping a strum or two to give time to finger the next chord). SO, I go to giventowail, and I print up these whacked out chords for Small Town (http://www.giventowail.com/new/tabs/pj/vs/elderlywomanchords.txt). NOW, when I sit there and try and play it, it seems to hard. But when I flip on over to Small Town on the Showbox DVD, it looks as if Stone isn't moving his fingers much AT ALL, nothing close to what these chords want me to do.

Help???

Wait, I'm confused. It goes from D (3230xx) to Cadd9 (33023x) to G (300023) in four words. Right?

    D

    e--2--middle
    b--3--ring
    g--2--index
    d--0--open
    a--0--open
    e--X--mute

    Cadd9

    e--3--pinkie
    b--3--ring
    g--0--open
    d--2--index
    a--3--middle
    e--X--mute

    G

    e--3--middle
    b--3--ring
    g--0--open
    d--0--open
    a--2--index
    e--3--middle

Leave your ring finger planted, and move the other fingers around it. The switch from D to Cadd9 will be kinda hard, but it comes with practice. The switch from Cadd9 to G is easy, you just move your index and middle fingers down one string (or rather, up one string towards you). This is a pretty familiar chord structure, and if you keep learning other songs, you will see this arrangement again... learn it now, and you can play dozens of other songs that re-work this same frame. Wonderwall by Oasis, Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Zombie by the Cranberries... there are others... I know there are... oh, Low Light uses similar shapes... ???

I could be wrong but isnt the D in Elderly a sus4? I dont have the CD to play against, and I cant decide by playing it myself, but if so, that would make it even easier

Well, it would be easier, but it's not accurate. I just tried it both ways to make sure, and it's a straight-up D chord.

honestly those little chord variations dont make that big of a difference now, just learn the basics first.

Alright, thanks guys, I'll work on it :)

Can anyone explain though why Stone doesn't switch as much?

i'm new too. i know the chords i just can get the stumming down right.
  • When you watch his hands, it doesn't look like he's moving much because it's such a slight change from the Cadd9 to G that you barely notice the movement.

  • the rythym i use most of the song is pretty simple

X XXXX X XXXX X saying that X is one stroke, the four at the ends are fast.

    whatever
  • think of it not so much as chords, but as you're playing the bass line on the bottom strings, while your ring finger remains on the D note at the third fret of the b string, and everything else moves.

it's the same 3 chords for "everyday", the buddy holly cover that they did a few years back. this was probably the first song i learnt to play the whole way thru while singing it as well, plus, it has a really nice easy solo thrown in as well!!! great for the beginner......

    G Cadd9 D

    then into

    G Cadd9 G

plus some power chords in the bridge and then into the solo..... the full tab is up on giventowail
  • im just learning to play also so all these things are helping me out too. just wanted to say thanks and ill probably be back with a question or two eventually.
