hello, i really wanna purchase a big muff but music stores near me NEVER have them so i wont be able to test them out before i buy one. i know that the russian is made with cheaper components but does this result in lower quality sound? are they different in the sounds they produce? if so could someone tell me what the differences are. i am a big fan of billy corgan (not expecting to recreate his sound but i just love the sound of a big muff), does anyone know which one he used and which one hendrix used? thanks for your time.
seems that needlessly its getting harder

i don't think hendrix ever used one. he died right around the time they arrived. edit: i think he was already dead when it was released. the muff fuzz (totally different came out in 69).

don't know which one corgan used. but he used a sustain punch creamy dreamer (a clone of the black russian) at one time.

i prefer the sound of the black russian muff but they are so shittily made that i hate them. if you look at it wrong, it will break. they are pieces of crap.

i've never had the chance to play a green russian.

    i like my USA muff.

same experience. The russian big muff is cool but the jacks are plastic and the switch sucks.

The USA is a lot more solid and it's true byp.

The Creamy Dreamer is a huge ripoff.

If you want to see it it's at http://www.musictoyz.com Essentially the Creamy Dreamer is exactly the same circuit as the Big Muff (covered in epoxy see Harmony Central reviews) with a nice looking case, good jacks and a good switch, at the low low price of $195. You can get a USA Big Muff made in NYC for $75

If you are going to spend $200 the Hot tubes would be a better piece. Basically it's a big muff warmed up with two 12AX7's and you can change the sound using different tubes.

My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • I have a Russian Small Stone (phase shifter) and it sounds alright, but has way too many problems.....kinda kills the tone of your guitar even when "off". "On" light doesn't always work/stay lit. I'd go with the American Electro Harmonix pedals before the Russians.
Cause I'll stop trying to make a difference. I'm not trying to make a difference. I'll stop trying to make a difference. No way!
