I hope Ed isn't so buried in the mix with the Atmos.
That was my one gripe about the end of Retrograde but I imagine it's because it would strain his voice live so that way he'd feel more freedom to ad lib it.

On my iPhone/AirPods, Ed is front and center. On my echo studio, which is Atmos, he's in the background. Wish he wasn't, but the music at the forefront sounds sick...
I'm not very knowledgeable on audio gear and stereo equipment, so forgive my question if its dumb. Is it pointless to buy the blu-ray/HD CDs if you only have standard stereo equipment?

It depends. Bluray Audio formats have higher bitrate and quality. They would still sound pretty amazing on a 2 speaker system wired into a solid receiver. If you bluray player is plugged into your TV, and your using the TV's speaker. Probably not a point
Noob question here. If I have an Atmos capable 4k player and a nice quality sound bar (not full surround unfortunately), will this be a better/different experience than listening to the Apple Music Atmos version with a nice pair of headphones?

Maybe marginally better. The real benefit is with a 5.1 (or more) surround system with two standing or bookshelf center speaks (or quality soundbar) and a receiver.

The “HD Audio” which refers to the fact it has high resolution stereo on it, may sound ever so slightly better than the CD/streaming versions if it has no peak limiting like the 24-bit download of the Ten show from 2014 IIRC vs the 16-bit version. Whether you’d pick them out in a double blind test is another story. The reason to celebrate here is the lossless TrueHD/Atmos track which will very noticeably smoke the lossy DD+JOC streaming variant of Atmos. FINALLY Pearl Jam will release one of their surround mixes in the fidelity intact.
Even listening in a two channel setup the Atmos mix will likely sound much better cranked than the stereo version because PJ’s studio releases still get mastered way too hot. This is fantastic news, day one preorder for me.
Will a Panasonic DP-UB820 be able to play the Bluray HD Audio tracks?
That's a 4K Ultra HD machine, so it will play any Blu-ray released in your market or all regions coded (ABC). This release will be all regions coded as it's music, I've yet to see any Blu-rays for studio material be region locked.
Also keep in mind Atmos will playback via whatever your speaker configuration is, whether you have just two front speakers (2.0), two fronts and a sub (2.1), quad (4.0), standard surround (5.1), or any other configuration (5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 7.4, 5.2.2, 5.2.4, 7.2.4, 9.2.6, etc), Atmos is flexible like that.
Atmos is always mastered with dynamics intact too, so I will rip the Atmos and downmix to stereo to create what for me will be the definitive stereo version, alive like music used to be in 1991. If you have an original 1991 Blood Sugar Sex Magik CD, you know what I'm talking about - it sounds better and better the louder you crank it.

I understood most of that.
That said, is there a way for them to remaster their old albums, and remaster them for vinyl? I always thought their old albums sounded a bit muddy.

They've done just that with VS and Yield. I'm kinda upset there's no mention that the new album is cut at 45RPM by Levi or someone else since I had hoped they had finally learned from their past mistakes of producing pretty MEH sounding vinyl for their studio albums.

The problem with Yield and Vs is they use existing masters, they're newly CUT to vinyl, but not newly mastered. They should sound very good, but they are not as dynamic as the lossy streaming Atmos versions mixed to stereo. I'm not trying to say which sounds better, that's always in the ear of the be-hear-er if you will lol, but it is pretty bassackwards that the version most suited for audiophiles, is the version with the poorest fidelity. There's a trade off here, loss of fidelity but better dynamics.
With Dark Matter there is no trade off, because we finally get the Atmos mix in the lossless flavour of Atmos. Winner!
