Tribute bands

WobbieWobbie Posts: 29,516
Most are pretty good. A few I remember seeing are Van Halen (Fair Warning), U2 (Rattle and Hum), DMB (I think they were called the DM Tribute B or something), Jimi (opening for Sam Kinison, back in the day), Prince (Purple Rain), Pink Floyd (Aussie version) and SRV (Chris Hiatt and Cold Shot). I know it’s sacrilegious, but Chris Hiatt was almost equal to SRV. Saw that guy three times. These folks play anywhere from casino lounges to decent venues. There’s a female AC/DC outfit, Hell’s Belles who play here regularly but I’ve never checked them out. There was a Rush tribute in Vegas who were supposed to be good.

Yeah, some are cheesy but it’s usually a cheap, good time. Who have you seen?

Saw a The Doors and a Led Zep tribute show.
One was part of a dinner and entertainment deal.  Both were very good.
Don't recall the names but they were both groups who traveled the country doing the cover shows....not off the hip

I've often thought it would be cool band to see (apparently still possible as it appears this band is still active) the Rolling Stones cover band, Sticky Fingers.
My interest in this band was piqued by coming across and reading this book (pictured below) about the band.  The focus of the story is on Glen Carroll, the frontman/singer who formed the band.  The book is Like a Rolling Stone by Steven Kurutz.  It's a fascinating look into the rough and rowdy ups and downs of being in a well established tribute band.  I really enjoyed the book and keep in on a shelf with my other Rolling Stones books.

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

    Long long time ago....

Brother was in a stones cover band Sticks & Stones. They were all great musicians. Put their own spin on the songs. Never played anywhere bigger than the corner bar. Talkin bout 30 years ago.

Back then did see the Soft Parade a couple times. Doors cover. Singer acted, looked & sounded the part. Great.

    Pink Floyd cover band.

    Jimi Hendrix cover band.

    All were great.

This past Summer we went to see Rearview, a PJ tribute band from the Chicago area at an amphitheater in a state park in Southern Indiana. They were pretty good and it was a fun night out.

Funny you posted this. I'm seeing a Chris Cornell/Soundgarden tribute/cover band next month like a few miles from me in West Chester, PA
    Called Superunknown. Supposedly really good.

I remember seeing Ledbetter during the Flyers/PJ hockey night. They were ok. I forget the name of this PJ band but the one that played during the '16 PJ philly shows down by Xfinity Live. Didn't think they were that good.

    Sometimes I struggle with them.

I saw an AIC/Nirvana one that was pretty solid.    They leaned really heavy on Bleach which turned out pretty good.

I saw a Chris Cornell one not long after he passed.  Not that many people showed up, and many people who were there weren't paying attention.  It sort of bummed me out, reminding me I'd never get to see him live again.

I am going to a show on Friday which has a Misfits cover bands and a Ramones tribute band.  Hoping that turns out great.

I guess the short version is that went I go to a tribute or cover show, it generally makes me long for the real thing.

I haven't seen them live yet, but Nerd Halen is a fun comedic cover/tribute band.

Caleb Rapoport is an excellent guitar player (check out his videos! 🤘🔥) and Hal Sparks is their singer.

Check them out at nerdhalen.com and @nerdhalen on socials.

Had a high school friend who ended up in an HBO documentary on tribute bands. At that time we was in a Queen tribute band playing guitar. Had hair just like Brian May.
He also was in Led Zep Again who Jimmy Page played with one night.

I had a friend who played in a local Rage cover band... they were pretty damn good, but the singer would talk like ZDLR in between the songs too... I found that weird.

I'm generally not a fan of tribute bands, but I get it, and don't knock those who are. To each his own.

Particularly because they are no longer performing, I would go to see a Shaggs tribute band if the members were serious about their music and not just making fun of them. The question is, would a Shaggs tribute band even be possible.

In case you haven't heard them, here's one of there songs:

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”

My dislike of cover bands is when the members or singer pretends to be that person. Sounding like them. Cool.

True. Yet when I saw that doors band. I thought of it like watching an actor. It gave me the feeling of stepping back in time.
I did once see a guy who thought he was Ozzy. I stared at him and he gave me an ozzy face. Was odd especially since they weren't performing that night. He really looked like ozzy though!!

I went and saw a Misfits cover band with a female vocalist (band was called She) and a Ramones Tribute band (called the Ramores).    Was a really fund show.  I don't go to all that many cover/tribute shows, but this one might of been the most fun.

    I like cover bands.

I cant stand tribute bands though.  It just feels like people living out some sort of fantasy as the person they are imitating and usually pretending to be them.  Can't get into it.

Went to this last night. They were good. Lead singer sounded great (he could hit the notes like Cornell). One of the guitarists was also real good as was the drummer. They mostly played Soundgarden and Audioslave. They did throw in a couple ToTD songs as well as a Cornell one. This wasn't from last night but this them

I've seen a few Pearl Jam tributes over the years, mostly around the mid 2000s to early 2010s such as No Code based in New Jersey, Ten out of Pittsburgh I think and Evenflow which was from Illinois if I recall correctly.
