hello, wondering what would be a good distortion pedal for a kid? not looking for anything high end but not a piece of junk, either. some of the bands they like are crossfade, HIM, system of a down, green day...

thanks
standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

Boss DS-1 or DS-2. I started out with the DS-2 and liked it. Have since moved on and sold it, but its still a decent pedal, and affordable, especially off eBay.

Digitech has some great stuff in that range lately. I think there's actually a Disturbed pedal and a Scott Ian pedal. The Boss DS-1 is classic. The Metal Zone is a bit more flexible.

Really cool and great sounding (but needing a reliability upgrade of plastic jacks is) the Russian Big Muff. The little big muff or double big muff would be cool too but the metal zone allows for more definition.

I'd just go into my favorite music shop and find something in the 40 - 80 dollar range. All of that stuff is in right now and they will be marketing the heck out of it for Christmas and well halloween, so you should be able to find something decent.

Digitech Metal Master, DF-7, Hot Head etc.

    DOD Grunge.

EHX - LBM RBM USBM etc.

    Boss Metal Zone, DS-1

Line 6 tone core uber metal.....

    Marshall Guvnor/ Jackhammer.

etc. Just try a bunch of stuff out, you'll find it. the kids even dig the multi effect stuff.

on the slightly more than 100 dollar level, Barber Burn Unit, might peak your interest.

    MI audio Crunch Box. 109

Rocktron has some interesting stuff too, I think the zombie is supposed to be Mesa inspired, I'm not certain, but most of those bands probably have a mesa back line.

    some other stuff.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • BOSS DS-1. That was my very first pedal and I still love it. I used it for Green Day stuff too by the way and it was glorious. If you dont wanna spend forty bucks, the Danelectro Pastrami Overdrive gives the exact same tone except it's not as durable. Good luck!

    the boss would work.
you could also go for something like a Pro-co RAT pedal if you want him to be "cool" haha.

I started out with a Boss DS-1 about 6 years ago, but I gave it away about 2 months ago to a kid who was just starting out, I think its the perfect distortion pedal for beginners

    The Boss DS-1 is good!

Or maybe one of the Line 6 things.
But the DS-1 is the best I think. Boss makes really good stuff.

If the DS-1 is good enough for Vai and Frusciante, it's good enough for anyone!

IMO, Frusciante is the best mainstream player out there today.
