hey can anyone here recommend me a good distortion pedal. any ideas just bored of channel switching on my head haha.
my pedal board consists of:

crybaby
boss super overdrive
boss phaser
axl 50s tremelo
danelectro octave pedal
ibanez soundtank delay (pile of ass)
mxr micro amp
I'm not saying stupidity should be a capital offence, but what say we take the safety labels off everything and let nature run it's course?

how much do you realistically want to spend? and what character do you want.

If money is not to much of an object the Soldano Supercharger is ridiculously good. The EHX Hot Tubes is cool too. There are a slew of others as well, http://www.musictoyz.com http://www.tonefactor.com and http://www.pedalgeek.com are good places to search.

If you just want like a channel change, Keeley and Analogman have some great options. The menatone King of the Brits is cool too.

Me personally, I use a Keeley BD2 and a Keeley 3 mode Rat.

The barber Burn Unit http://www.barberelectronics.com is great too.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Akai Shred-O-Matic. Worst name, great pedal.
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"

If I lived in the UK, I'd get a Lovetone Cheese-Source and be done with distortion pedals. Here in the states, the pounds sterling to USD makes that pedal more expensive than a mexican tele.

Glad I bought mine when the dollar was worth something :)
  • I have the Soldano Supercharger and like Pac said, it really kicks some ass. You can get a really rich and saturated sound with this tubed pedal and it cleans up nice when you roll off the guitar volume. I bought mine used for somewhere in the neighborhood of $200, but it has been a bargain considering how much I depend on this particular pedal.

I would suggest going somwhere to try out the pedals you are interested in, or pay attention to what some of your favorite artists are using. In fact this is how I decided to look into Soldano stuff. I had seen Ben Harper play a live show with all his dirty stuff going thru some Soldano cabs. The sound was just so crunchy and smooth. But seeing how I already had an amp, the Supercharger became the logical choice; it was a very wise decision.
And if hope could grow from dirt like me, it can be done

If I ever owned a distortion pedal, it would probably be a ProCo Rat or a modded version thereof.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

Ben Harper and the rest of the Innocent Criminals are up on the technology list. It's fun to watch DVD's and freeze frame them to see what he's using.

The last one I saw the lead guitar player was playing a Mad Professor amp. I think it's built by the same guy behind BJFE Effects. It's ridiculous.

You got a deal on the Supercharger at 200, that's half off new.

It's a badass pedal. Very versatile.

  • if you're not looking to spend upwards of 200 bucks, look into a Ibanez SD-9 from ebay. I love mine.
"I'll do whatever the song dictates - if it doesn't need a real lead, then I won't do one. But if it does, then I'll fuckin' go off." - Mike

"Japan is awesome; the fans there knew all the words to all the songs...at least phonetically." - Stone

"I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version." - EV

If eric has any left, the shannon distortion is based around the circuit of the SD-9 I believe. It's probably even cheaper the way these reissues have been going.

maxon has a good version too, they built the originals anyway
