2016 North Carolina vs. 2023 Texas - what's different?

I'm considering cancelling my trip for the Austin shows over this. At a minimum, I'll offset every dollar I spend in Texas with a donation to a local organization trying to make this situation better for kids in Texas. 

I'm looking to hear something from my favorite band about why they are ok with this now but took a stand in 2016 (context: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/pearl-jam-cancel-raleigh-concert-to-oppose-bathroom-bill-39517/amp/)

With the political climate today in the states, between this and abortion, they'd only play 5 states if they did what they did back in 2016.
