Acoustic Guitar - Cleaning the Fretboard?

I am sure someone here can make some suggestions. I have a 1973 Guild D-35. I have had it in my posession for the past 3 years, my dad had it for the rest of the time.
Anyway, I am changing the strings and decided to clean the fretboard, which is disgusting. All sorts of 'gunk' on it. Any suggestions? It seems like many resources recommend 000 or 0000 gauge steel wool and then some lemon oil. Does this sound right? I just don't want to do any damage to it.
Also, where can I obtain lemon oil or tung oil?
