In a culture where selfies, narcissism, and promoting yourself on social media are so pervasive, it was refreshing to chat with someone who is genuinely famous & successful who is doing something selfless with his time and money. Jeff Ament not only plays bass in Pearl Jam, but he’s been an avid skateboarder since he was a teenager. He’s spent the last 10 years humbly funding the construction of 27 skateparks across his home state of Montana. The majority of the state is rural, and Montana has one of the highest suicide rates in the US. - these parks have provided a safe-haven for kids to form a strong sense of community, self-worth and belonging. This week on The Plug w/ Justin Jay we sit down for a chat to discuss how Jeff formed the Montana Pool Service and how personally gratifying it has been for him to see a generation of kids grow up skating in his parks. We also discuss his new album with his side project Deaf Charlie, and hear his thoughts about the term “grunge” 30 years after it was coined... Jeff Ament plays bass in Pearl Jam and is a founding member of the band. He’s also been an avid skateboarding since he was a teenager. He's self-financed the construction of over 27 skate parks across his home state of Montana. It’s a source of immense gratification for him, and he often visits these parks in person to sweep the concrete, skate with the kids, and witness firsthand the impact that he’s made. This week we sit down to chat about his new band Deaf Charlie, his experience traveling with Pearl Jam vs a side project, and why he's going on a 1200 mile skateboarding mission with kids that he met at one of his skateparks. Plus, find out who Jeff gives his Plug of The Week to.
