To seal or not to seal?

That is my question! It is more just for discussion and hearing others’ opinions. I have heard from some record aficionados that you should leave a record sealed as it is worth more. I have also heard that the plastic wrap/ shrink wrap never stops shrinking, thus creating spine splits, etc. So those babies should be opened up. I use poly sleeves to store all my records to keep them happy! Personally, I bought the vinyl to spin it, so keeping it on wraps is of no interest to me. What are everyone else’s thoughts?

Find out the value of the album sealed.
Find out the value of the album unsealed
Take the delta and put that in the stock market
    Rip open and spin away

Not necessarily. Some Elvis records are still top dollar.

Buy the record and download the songs.  Problem solved.

    Or just buy opened vinyl.

Sure. But I see the collectability value tank as everything is reissued. Vaults/sevens/other one offs may increase bc they most likely wont be reissued.

    Just my dumb opinion.

I've picked up old records that were sealed and when I cracked them opened they were like new. Depends on humidity/how it's stored.

If you want an investment buy sealed records of bands you don't like. That way you don't give a monkey's when you sell them 😂

I’ve never understood why people keep records sealed. I’m sure they look very nice on the shelf, but they don’t sound as good inside the wrap!

Open them up, drop the needle, read the liner notes, enjoy the experience.

PJ vinyl sounds like ass anyway. Keep em sealed and stream lossless.

Personally If I was going to spend some coin on a record I would rather know it was taken care of rather then sealed.  If I was buying online from two people claiming they had a mint sealed and an NM+ where they kept the record outside the sleeve and will ship it that way I would take the NM+ everyday.  I would at least know the record is fine and I would also know that they would ship it to me in the best way to avoid damage, plus if we are being honest mint records rarely exist and are even rarer among old records still wrapped in tight plastic.  If you explain how you store them, why, and how you'll ship it you will probably be better off then having a "mint" sealed record because other record collectors would know they are buying from an actual record collector.

Unless you have multiple copies for the sole purpose of eventually selling the sealed ones to make a profit, I don't see the point in ever keeping a record sealed. Otherwise, wouldn't you want to play it?
FWIW, while I have read about this idea that plastic wrap can eventually warp a record, I have never bought a sealed older album that was warped at all.

That doesn't matter in most cases, because there were usually so many Elvis albums made that most of them are barely worth anything. Most PJ albums had small runs and will therefore retain value better.
