News Media outlets are shutting down or pulling back.

Vice files for bankruptcy.  MTV News is pulling the plug.

More and more news outlets are trimming down on investigative reporting.  People would rather get their news from twitter than a trusted source.

Soon it will all be owned and ran by the big corporations.

This has been happening for years but I am hoping for independent media to still have a foothold.

Thoughts?

There's no money in it. People want the news that confirms their biases & there's no shortage of that available on cable tv, regardless of where you land on the spectrum.

Why would the average consumer pay extra to subscribe to a relatively respectable outlet like the Washington Post or Wall Street Journal when you can get the 'feel good' [bias confirming] news you want to be told for free?  (free being a relative term here... most people are already paying for cable or some other TV subscription service)

My thoughts are that this was painfully obvious that it would happen eventually. Media was originally a trusted source, and seemed to accept a sense of responsibility towards exposing truth. When they realized entertaining people was more profitable, the pivot happened, and for some reason the trust remained. You reap what you sow.

Read the media monopoly by ben bagdikian.  Its from the 80's and it has been happening since before then.  This is nothing new.  There are like five I think major companies that control 90% of he media one way or the other the last I checked.  When in doubt assume you are being deceived.

My guess as to what's behind this:  chatGPT
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Well aware it's been happening forever.  It is when actual journalism goes away is saddening.  Hate MTV for what they became but they did research on music at times.

    Vice news was great also.

What independent news/journalism outlets are left?  The Nation, Rolling Stone?  I don't know of any ones that aren't left leaning?

The NYT is removing their sports coverage from their pages.

The Athletic will take over but still, they are not "covering" sports anymore.
