its a 2005 ebony gibson les paul custom, gold hardware and all. she plays like a dream and sounds incredible through my marshall half stack. surprisingly it has the best set up of any gibson i have ever purchased new. (my sg and other les paul standard had crap set-ups)

i was looking at a 1987 LP custom in ebony, but i could not finance it at that vintage shop so i got a new one at guitar center for $200 cheeper with a custom shop case and all the case candy that the 1987 was lacking. This thing is completely clean and had only been in the store for 2 days. they sell them for $3199 but i got mine for $2399, it was a killer deal. i have always wanted one in white but have never seen a white one in person. i also could not get a white one for that price because it would take several weeks to have one shipped from the factory. i didn't want to risk having one shipped and missing out on that price.

i was thinking of doing a straight up trade for the '87, but i don't know about that now. i am a little too fond of the new one. i would trade for a white one though. i can post pics when i get around to it.

if you are looking for a gibson les paul custom, now is the time to get one from guitar center for a hellova price.

Congrats on the new guitar. I'd think long and hard about that 87 if the new one is speaking to you. There is a lot to be said for making a connection with your instrument. Don't foresake that for anything.

i've got a black 96 custom. i don't play it much because of the weight but i'll never part with it. it's just too badass.
  • yeah i just finished playing it for a bit. i need to get the action a little lower but i love the tone. its a little fuller than my standard. i am guessing its the pickups and the ebony fretboard and fatter neck. it also feels like it has 11s on it instead of the 10s i normally use. i think i am going to keep it instead of going for the '87. thanks for the advise, it is definitely talking to me.

we gig 6-8 times a month and i have decided that i am only going to take it to the venues with big stages and let my other LP and sg be my workhorses at the smaller staged venues. we play on some narrow stages so i don't want to risk impaling my bass player or breaking off the headstock, which happened to my other LP. i don't want anything happening to this guitar. like a puss, i am even a little hesitant about installing the straplocks...lol.

wow, thats pretty sweet. they are too badass. the weight does not seem to be much of an issue to me, i have been playing les pauls pretty much exclusively for 4 years now. this custom weighs in at a whopping 10.1 pounds, while my standard is about 9.0 pounds.

I had the opportunity to use an '84 custom at a gig, and it was fantastic. Love to do it again sometime.

Awesome. Glad you found a good one, and got it for a good price. If you financed it through GC, watch the bills, they like to send them too you a day or two ahead of the due date sometimes. Oh and do install the straplocks :D Piece of mind, you don't want one to come loose and have to catch it inches above the floor. It gets scary. I bet it sounds fantastic though. Thick and Huge.

What kind of candy did you get with it?
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • Congrats! I recently got a LP Custom in heritage cherry sunburst. No one had them in the stores, so I went through AMS. The first one they sent out was terrible. The nut was poorly cut, the ring around the bridge pickup was broken, and there were imperfections all over it. They replaced it a few days later, and the new one is amazing. You got a great deal on that one, I paid 3k for mine! I was tempted by the 68 custom, but the only one they had at GC was beat to hell, and they would only give me $100 off for the damages. Some bs about it being exclusive, and they couldn't go any lower.

it came with a key to the case, a trussrod wrench/screwdriver tool, a gibson custom shop polish cloth with 3 gibson CS picks (lol), a nice little gibson braided guitar cable, various manuals on how to adjust the truss rod and bridge and stuff, and a gibson custom, art, and historic certificate of authenticity. thats alot more than my sg or LP standard came with.

congrats. sweet axe. I love my Les Paul! enjoy!!

They weight a ton, but are weight balanced so well, that it's so comfortable to play standing up. Whole neck is in perfect reach! Now if it could just restring itself it'd be perfect :)

dude you're going to love it. i have a honeyburst standard that is my main guitar and i LOVE it. the custom is only going to be used for big gigs i think, like this weekend. last thing i need is to get it knocked over on a small stage or something. my standard has had the headstock reglued and its solid as a rock so i am not worried about anything happening to it. for as big as these les pauls are you would think they'd be a little more durable...

I'm only 15 so it's gonna take a long time. I know its gonna be worth it though. I'm thinkin Honeyburst, Herritage Cherry Sunburst, Iced Tea, or Wine Red w/ a 60s neck. If I get it next summer I'm happy.

Don't know why, but I so want a gold top.

wow i wish i had been playing at 15. i didn't start until 18 or 19. i'd go with the honeyburst with the 60s neck, but i am biased because thats what i have =) keep saving and you'll eventually get there.

I've played since I was 10. It took over just about everything at 13.

  • So i played the new guitar for a little bit the past 3 days, maybe 15 minutes each day monday and tuesday. i also played it at practice for 2 hours last night and i noticed that the action on the bass strings began to rise and by the end of practice it was almost impossible to play. so thinking it just needs to be set up i took it to my local vintage guitar dealer who has been setting up my guitars for 4 years or so. he took it out of the case, looked down the neck from the headstock and said "man this guitar is f'd up. the neck is twisted". sure enough, the side with the bass strings is straight, but at the 4th fret on the treble strings side, there is a significant clockwise twist. it looked like one of those twisters snacks they used to make.

he said he has been working on guitars for 25 years and has never seen such a flaw in a neck of a brand new guitar. he said it was not repairable and was defective from the factory. he suggested that i immediately return the guitar and demand a replacement. he showed me that 87 LP custom and the neck was totally straight. he also showed me several 70s and 80s LPs that had straight necks and then he showed me a 99 LP that had the same neck problem as my custom. he said that "if i was ceo of gibson i would be ashamed to put a custom shop historic certificate of authenticity on that thing".

i called the guitar center manager and told him about the problem. he said that he has been having complaints from customers about bad necks on the new les pauls the last few weeks. he called the gibson rep and told him of the problems he has been having with the new les pauls. he ordered me a white LP custom (which i really wanted in the first place) to replace the ebony one, for the same price. it should be here fairly soon.

i was impressed with the quick action of the guitar center management to recognize the problem and take steps to rectify the situation. i am a little dismayed that there are so many complaints about these les pauls. if there is an issue with this white one i am thinking i will just save my money and buy a vintage gibson, because they seem to be loads better qualitywise. either that or i will get something else. so a warning....if you are looking at a new gibson, make sure the neck is not warped or twisted so you don't have a problem like the one i am having.
