Says He’s Also Heard Geese Are Being Abducted and SlaughteredI think that's usually called "poaching," something typically associated with hillbillies.
You'd think JV would be well-versed in something like that.
Remindme this story?

I made a comment to someone how stupid that comment sounded and was told it’s a thing. It’s a problem in Ohio that’s been a topic lately. That’s what I was told, not what I believe.
I know one video doesn’t make it a problem. It’s unclear if she’s even an immigrant or not (I haven’t seen any reliable info either way). And appears to be more of a case of mental illness than culture. But I guess this video and a few pictures of animal abuse online have sparked this pet eating rumor I had no idea about. It’s more people than Trump and Vance that think this is going on.
Still sounded incredibly dumb to hear it from a presidential candidate.
Later that morning on Truth Social, Trump posted an image of the police report as well as video of a woman in the city of Canton, Ohio (which is 173 miles away from Springfield) who was arrested for eating a cat. The woman is a U.S. citizen and not of Haitian descent, according to press reports.
When I heard that comment on the debate I thought it came from nowhere. Apparently there are people who actually believe this is happening. I had no idea people thought that was going on.
I don’t believe it’s actually happening more than an isolated case. And yes, I saw this was in Canton and not Springfield, but I figured that to be pretty irrelevant.I’m just saying there’s this sub culture out there who really think pets are getting eaten up, sparked partially by that video. I don’t think it’s true, but I also had no idea that people actually thought that either. Albeit probably not a large number of people, but that’s why I called it a sub culture of extreme right/conservative/maga whatever you want to call it. Pre-debate people thought that, I had no idea this was a thing anyone was concerned about.
t's not some random internet hoax gone viral, it's a racist and xenophobic narrative being pushed by the GOP Presidential ticket. It's now been 3 presidential election cycles with a republican platform blatantly stoking these sentiments, and people just shrug as if there's no way to tell where these stories are coming from or why.

"Earlier this week, vice presidential hopeful JD Vance spread a racist, debunked claim that Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio, had been stealing people’s pets and eating them. Donald Trump then amplified that claim to millions of people during Tuesday night’s debate. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs” he said, sounding like someone’s crazy uncle. “The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating—they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame.”
Considering that Trump’s line about “eating the dogs” and “eating the cats” was the low point of the night—in that it cemented the Republican candidate’s status as an unserious, unhinged individual who should not be allowed anywhere near the nuclear codes—you might have thought Vance would have decided to back off the pet story for now. But, surprise! The Ohio senator has instead doubled down...."
All I did was say I was unaware this was a thing being shared that people actually believed until now. Were you aware of these stores before the debate?
I had no idea these were stories being shared and believed by people until I spoke with someone who believes it.
I thought it was Trump just rambling something off, but apparently this has been a thing for maga they believe being shared in their right wing circles. I had no idea. I was surprised to learn this wasn’t new “information” for a lot of people. Maybe a lot of people here follow that stuff and already knew, I didn’t.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -

Poaching and domestic animal abuse happens way more often than it should. I remember a veterinarian in Texas being charged for killing a cat with a bow and arrow.

The question is not "can you believe that immigrants are abducting and slaughtering animals," it's "why was this suddenly a matter of extreme, debate-worthy mention importance?"
Fear. Fear and division among low-info voters. There's your answer.0 -

It does bring up what was obvious in the debate. Trump is deep, deep into the social media ecosystem of lies. Not just this, but his statement on the crime rate was another right wing conspiracy lie. They claim that big cities aren't reporting their stats to the FBI, that's why crime is down. It's total nonsense and only alive in the fever swamps, but that's where he dwells.0 -

It's now been 3 presidential election cycles with a republican platform blatantly stoking these sentiments, and people just shrug as if there's no way to tell where these stories are coming from or why.
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/story/jd-vance-pet-eating-story-geese-abducted-and-slaughteredJD Vance Doubles Down on Evidence-Free Pet-Eating Story, Says He’s Also Heard Geese Are Being Abducted and Slaughtered
If you hadn't heard of it before Tuesday, you might want to expand your news sources.
Classic.
Vance has been pushing this story since before the debate; I knew exactly what trump was talking about when he brought it up Tuesday night and I'm not alone. Do your own homework as to where and when it was reported.
If it was everywhere, give me one example outside social media where you saw it. Should be easy. I can claim the sky is blue and I get asked for sources from people here. Just give me one report from Monday or before where this was a story outside social media.
All the stories I’ve come across are linked to social media or local news covering the arrest. I can’t expect to follow local news around the country.

I didn’t say Trump and Vance didn’t talk about it. I said it was a story being pushed by the maga circle that I hadn’t heard prior to the debate, and I assumed many others hadn’t either. For those not on social media, it wasn’t covered by a major news outlet (to my knowledge). It was being spread primarily on social media.
What exactly are we even arguing? I’m asking what news outlets should I expand my resources to include so I would have heard of this story and you won’t answer.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -

Both NBC and Forbes (at least) were reporting Vance's claims about Haitians eating pets in advance of the debate, but I digress.

Having said that. I think dismissing these lies as just something believed by a subculture or 'extreme' fringe group is irresponsible considering the way the GOP ticket is pushing the narrative. (& anyone who's been paying a minimal amount of attention these last 8 years know exactly why they're pushing it)0 -
