Some Jr. kits are made just for kids, but that doesn't mean you can't use them as an adult. In fact, a lot of jazz and old-school country drummers like to play on really small kits, either for tone or for ease of carrying them. And the number of players using 3-piece kits is actually pretty big... kick, snare, and a floor tom is a pretty popular arrangement, especially for indie/lo-fi stuff.

I'd steer away from a lot of the so-called "Jr." kits, just because they're typically lower quality... you can find a decent kit from Pulse, PDP, Ludwig, Sonor, Yamaha, or Pearl for not much money. Right now, Gretsch has a set called the "Catalina" that's very affordable, especially considering the quality and brand name:

A quick search yielded this little affordable gem:

Add a beginner's cymbal package to that, and you're in business. If you want, you can just not use any of the rack toms and get that 3-piece feel.

I'm getting ready to move (well, about 9 months from now) and considering selling my Sonor kit for a V-Drum set so I can have it and play in an apartment without getting evicted...
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
