He's going to be going through a very tough time, emotionally, soon.

When the Dodgers knock the Cubs out of the NLDS he'll probably be heartbroken, along with a legion of other Cubs fans.

Oh well, at least he/they should be used to it by now.

And it could be worse...he could be a Mets fan...ouch.

Heartbroken over what? The guy has worn a White Sox cap, in the past.

No self-respecting, full-blooded, true Cubs fan would ever wear a White Sox cap.

Won't be a problem, he'll just trade-in his Cubs hat for a Dodgers hat and be done with it. Are the Padres in it? If so, Vedder could get himself a Padres hat:D

I think people are underestimating the Dodgers pitching when they imply that the Cubs' starting pitching is somehow going to be dominant.

I always like to look at momentum, because as last year's Rockies proved, a lot of times playoff success has to do with how you played in the weeks/months leading up to the playoffs, not how you played at the beginning of the season.

And, if you look at each teams' 3 top starters after the All-Star break, the Dodgers are actually right up with the Cubs, if not better:

    Dempster: 7-2, 2.57 vs. Lowe: 7-3, 2.46
    Zambrano: 4-3, 5.80 vs. Billingsley: 7-2, 3.06
    Harden: 5-1, 1.92 vs. Kuroda: 4-4, 4.42

And, if you look at the teams' records post-All-Star break, the Dodgers have been, again, right up there with the Cubs:

Dodgers: 38-29 (including a rancid 8-game losing streak)
    Cubs: 40-26

So, I see a match-up here of two very similarly talented clubs that can go either way. I expect the Dodgers to win at least one of the first two games, so game 3 might be the key.

    Go Dodgers!

    Go CUBS!!!!

I am a Cubs supporter, not because of Ed at all...

But 100% due to my undying support of Lou Piniella!!!

C'mon Sweet Lou, take your team to the promise land. Where, subsequently, you never took us. That aside, Seattle will ALWAYS love and support you!!! Now, go win another ring!!!

Wasn't it hard for him to take Seattle to the Promised land when the owners get rid of everyone?

Yeah, the Dodgers are awesome only 7 teams that did not make the playoffs have better records then the Dodgers, if the Cubs were in that division they could have clinched earlier than the Angels.

    Runs per Game (MLB):
    2 Chicago Cubs 5.31
    24 LA Dodgers 4.32

    Opponents' Runs Per Game (MLB)
    2 LA Dodgers 4.00
    4 Chicago Cubs 4.17

    Overall differential (MLB)
    1 Chicago Cubs 1.14
    13 LA Dodgers 0.32

Dodgers last World Series title: 1988
Cubs last world series title: 1908

You got a hundred years of history against you. If they win this series they'll just lose the next one. No cubs fan can say shit about the Mets who in the 47 years they have been a franchise have two World Series titles and the Cubs have 0. They don't even have a WORLD SERIES APPEARANCE in that time period. I like the Cubs, but they'll find a way to choke this year, just like they do every year. At least the Mets aren't a franchise based on losing. Plus the million or so Cubs fans who seem to come out of the woodwork on the rare occasion that the Cubs have a good year are the worst fans in the world.

Manny won't be able to pick up all that slack, sorry.

Let's think about this. Is it fair to compare SEASON-LONG statistics when one team (the Dodgers) picked up their main offensive weapon (Manny) in August, and added another significant piece of their offense (Casey Blake) just a week before that?

    Of course not.

So let's look at stats in August/September (Manny played his first game for LA on August 1):

    Dodgers: 4.63 runs/game
    Cubs: 5.29 runs/game

    Opponents Runs/Game:
    Dodgers: 3.70
    Cubs: 4.04

    Overall Differential:
    Dodgers: 0.93
    Cubs: 1.25

So, while the Cubs have the edge, it's much closer than you listed when looking at the entire season.

So if the pitching is equal and the Cubs have a better offense, then the Cubs will win? Even if it is close, right?

The season long stats show that the Cubs have been good all season long. Is it fair to compare the last two months' stats when there were games when the Cubs were starting one regular starter? When they send Sean Marshall to the hill?

The Cubs will walk the slow-ass Manny. Who is going to drive him in? And if Casey Blake is a "significant piece" of your offense you are going to be in trouble.

Also, I could score as many runs as the Dodgers/game when in the last 2 months when you play the Padres and the Giants 9 times each.

Anyway, it will be a fun series and I'll be watching on Wednesday.

Perhaps. But in baseball, when two teams are fairly evenly matched, a single play -- a bloop hit, an error, etc. -- can change the outcome in a hurry. I mean that on both sides. My point of the stats was that neither team has a decided edge over the other, so the series should be a tough one that can go to either team.
The season long stats show that the Cubs have been good all season long. Is it fair to compare the last two months' stats when there were games when the Cubs were starting one regular starter? When they send Sean Marshall to the hill?

Perhaps it's unfair on both sides. Certainly you can't make the argument that the Dodgers should be judged on their season-long stats when they only had their main power hitter/run producer/offensive weapon for the last two months, can you?

Ideally we would compare stats of games only when both teams were at full strength, but that would be very time consuming, I think...

The Cubs will walk the slow-ass Manny. Who is going to drive him in? And if Casey Blake is a "significant piece" of your offense you are going to be in trouble.

That's one of the reasons the Dodgers were a significantly better offensive team the second half of the season. With Manny drawing a ton of walks, the players hitting behind and around him benefited greatly. Just having an extra man on base means a lot to a Dodgers team that doesn't have a lot of power, but hits for a high average. Walking Manny will be a welcome gift to the Dodgers, trust me.

Don't underestimate the Dodgers' offense. It got MUCH better during the second half of the season when Torre realized that Andruw Jones should not be allowed on the field except to graze and, of course, after the Dodgers picked up Manny and Blake.

In fact, a quick comparison of the two teams' post-All-Star Break batting average shows:

    Dodgers: .279
    Cubs: .273

If you watch the series, you'll see that the Dodgers actually have a pretty solid offensive line-up from top to bottom, especially if Rafael Furcal is able to play.
Also, I could score as many runs as the Dodgers/game when in the last 2 months when you play the Padres and the Giants 9 times each.

You're right, the Giants and Padres SUCK. :D
