guitar humidifiers?

anybody here have any experience with guitar humidifiers?
I live in a very dry climate and i have heard suggestions that I should have one. I have had this guitar (Taylor Big Baby) for a couple years, for whatever reason, haven't gotten one and to my knowledge, is still in fine form.
The folks where I purchased the guitar just kinda gave me the 'well, it couldn't hurt' type of answer, I would have expected a "Hell yes you should have one". Since I haven't had one for a couple years, I didn't know if getting one now would do more harm than good.
So I guess what I am asking, has anyone had a bad experience with an acoustic cracking due to dry climate? If anyone has a recommendation on the type of humidifier to get/not to get, if I should really get one, it would be appreciated.

i had a yamaha's top split (of course, it was shit in the first place) and the back of my morgan is split. and this was in a room that i kept at 35% humidity.
i now have the planet waves type that sits in the sound hole. nothing touches the guitar.
