Wow, Fender has indeed gotten their sh*t together. That sounds great Greg, thanks for the clips.

it's been interesting reading all the reviews on this thing. lots of people seem to be down on the deluxe reverb ever since this thing appeared. but also lots of complaints because the prices are so close. the general feeling is that the princeton is overpriced at $900. may be true. i think it went up from $800. i don't know.

i decided to grab one now while my local store is still at parity with US prices.

perhaps it was too much. but i've always wanted a princeton. i tried a princeton recording once and this puts it to shame.

i need to spend some time A/B'ing it with my deluxe. it definitely has a different overdriven character. i think the trem's nicer too.
  • These dang clips, seem to be burning a hole in my pocket.

it's like the 5E3's private school cousin.

That's the problem! I'm a huge 5E3 fan. But the tremolo and reverb is so appealing!

Of course if I had a Fender Reverb unit, I wouldn't be thinking about it.

well, to be fair, it doesn't sound like a 5E3 really. i just mean as far as power levels and tube complement etc. the 5E3 is way gnarlier. i.e. my casino with the princeton on "5" you can hear above. the casino with my 5E3 on "6" results in insane feedback etc.

different beasts for sure but related.

buy the revibe from weber (or there are a few builders making similar things) and you're set.

Princeton has more head room then?

I'm still leaning towards a ceriatone clone of a 5E3 in a head.

yeah, i'd say so. i guess it really depends on your dynamics and pickup output. without those mids, it's definitely not as gainy.

apart from the PCB mounted jacks/pots, i don't really have any issue with the build quality. and even that's not a quality issue. just an ease of tinkering thing.

i think accessing the underside of the board, while not easy, wouldn't be too bad if something needed to be replaced.

    very clean, nice.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

part of me wishes i'd bought the weber kit and built it myself but i didn't want the hassle given my limited energy these days.... i spent a lot of time tweaking the 5E3 and 18watt and i just don't have the patience these days.

i may still though, someday, buy chassis kits for both the princeton and the deluxe and make handwired versions for fun but i certainly have no concerns about how this one is built. it's actually probably a little bit more robust than my deluxe reverb though they're basically made the same.
  • I applaud fender, for NOT soldering the tube sockets directly to the board.
