ok, you can hear a faint whistling sporatically in the amp. not loud at all. can't hear it when playing. it would fuck up recordings though.
which tubes are dying? or is this even the problem?

and i was just happy to find some tubes. i found a pair of 6L6s as well. brand new. for an amp i no longer have. off to ebay they went.
