Catalogue of "Truly Unique" Sets

Yeah, yeah, I know - every setlist is unique, but I'm trying to catalogue instances in which the band did something out of the ordinary, such as playing a full album, starting the show acoustic, "the experiment" in Mansfield, etc.  Here's what I got so far - please feel free to supplement.  I'm too lazy to add the Bridge School shows.  Also, I think there was a show in 20166 that Stone picked the setlist for, so that should probably get added.  Other thoughts?

3/16/92 - MTV Unplugged
4/12/94 - Oprheum -crew created the setlist
6/20/95 - Red Rocks II - band starts show seated, playing acoustic songs
/24/95 - San Francisco - Neil Jam
5/3/03 - State College - unusually long show for this era
7/2/03; 7/3/03; 7/11/03 - the Mansfield experiment
7/14/03 - Holmdel - playing two tracks from every album in sequential order for the main set
10/22/03 - Benaroya Hall
10/28/03 - Santa Barbara - Temple of the Dog, Jack Johnson, etc.
10/2/04 - Toledo VFC - Neil Jam
10/27/09; 10/28/09; 10/30/09; 10/31/09 - Spectrum shows - not quite "the experiment" but similar; 10/31/09 - longest show ever?
9/3/11; 9/4/11 - PJ20
10/7/14 - Moline - "No Code" show
10/20/14 - Milwaukee - "Yield" show
4/16/16 - Greenville - "Vs." show
4/29/16 - Philly - "Ten" show
5/10/16 - Toronto - "Binaural" show
5/16/22 - Fresno - Drummer-palooza (Krusen reunites with band)
7/9/16 - Telluride - band starts show seated, playing acoustic songs
7/25/22 - Amsterdam - band starts show seated, playing acoustic songs

thanks!

Gorge 2005 with seated opening set, relatively long show.
Santa Barbara 2006 with the “mini Gorge” opening set.
Chicago 2007 Vic Theatre set full of ratites, extended Ed preset to open.

Not sure if you’re including straight up weird setlists, but the Newcastle 2006 show where Mark Richards created the setlist was really unique.

I think Amsterdam 2022 is only unique since they started sitting down on stools. Taking a look at YouTube, the first three songs were played with electric guitars except for Off He Goes.

If you have State College for its length.. 9/29/96 Randall’s Island night 2 was 168 mins long. Definitely long for it’s era.. do believe it was the longest ever PJ show… until many years later..

In addition Gorge 05 also felt a bit like a Lost Dogs tour show.    I remember that instead of saving rarities for the encore, the sprinkled rarities through the entire set, which got a little more common with the 13/16 3 hour barn burners, but was pretty uncommon back then.

Wrigley 2013 was clearly designed to be a special show. The rain interfered in one sense, but added to the uniqueness in another.

Yep State College is longer but from 96 till that show I think Randall’s II was longest almost 7 years

Honorary mention for Barcelona 1996 soundcheck? It's as long as their earliest shows. There is no special theme per se, but it features multiple takes for each of In My Tree, Hard To Imagine, and I'm Open, the "debut" of Parting Ways, and relative rarities Around the Bend and Garden, plus Leaving here. Very unusual "set"!

Also - March 13, 1992 "Ten" show, Munich Germany Ten played in entirety.
  • If you're talking about shows when they started acoustic/seated/different...

Gorge 2006 was the "sunset music for Tom Petty"

Fenway 2 from 2016 was a similar situation with about 30 minutes of softer/slow stuff, even though Eddie talked for maybe 3-5 minutes after the opening song.

Toronto 2009 - Ted Leo (frontman of the opening band) forgot his passport, so Eddie and Jeff do Bee Girl together, then do an Iggy Pop cover with the Pharmacists, then Ed does some Neil Young tunes, then Mike sings a song he wrote - basically, Pearl Jam opens for Pearl Jam. And we got Brain of J!

Chicago night 1 in '09 - a friend of Jeff's was hit by a car and passed away. The majority of the show was songs around loss and mortality, which made for a very interesting show.
    '05 - TO, '06 - TO 1, '08 - NYC 1 & 2, '09 - TO, Chi 1 & 2, '10 - Buffalo, NYC 1 & 2, '11 - TO 1 & 2, Hamilton, '13 - Buffalo, Brooklyn 1 & 2, '15 - Global Citizen, '16 - TO 1 & 2, Chi 2

7/11/03 is already on the list, but it should get a special mention as PJ opened for Sleater-Kinney opening for PJ (the 12-song acoustic set).

Uniondale 2003 was the most unique show I have seen. Not so much for the setlist but for the crowd interaction.
