Music midtown in Atlanta canceled

So, Livenation has not confirmed, but Music Midtown in Atlanta is canceled, apparently due to the promoters inability to enforce a no guns allowed inside the concert since it is on public land (Piedmont Park). Georgia laws have changed and you cannot tell someone they can’t bring a gun.

While I don’t have tickets to this year (mostly a saving money issue, would love to go), that is really frustrating. Having been there before, I cannot imagine having weapons in such a tight space would be good for anybody. Also, the amount of money to the local economy lost has to be massive. Many bands already skip Atlanta dates except for Midtown or Shaky Knees. Does that mean they won’t come back?

Was at midtown festival many years ago.  Definitely not a place to allow guns.

Can you bring firearms to a Hawks, Braves or Falcons game? If not, why not? Why are those venues special? AR15 over the shoulder or strapped across the chest should be welcome everywhere, along with multiple 30 round magazines taped together on ammo pouches. What's the hootaninny?

It’s the public land aspect of Piedmont Park. It is public land and not normally a concert venue. The sports arenas are privately owned.

It’s just so stupid. So, is the argument that I need a gun in a crowd of 50,000 in case a bad actor has a gun? How can I conceivably be of help unless I happen to be directly next to the shooter? Can you imagine the “friendly fire” that would result from this? It’s ridiculous. How many people are going to go see Jack White or MCR and be angry they can’t bring their gun?

Were all the pro sports arenas built and/or  financed with private money or were tax dollars or government issued bonds used for some aspect of building or financing? I seem to recall one of the names being “Fulton County Stadium?” Anyway, if tax dollars or government bonds were utilized, the argument could be made that they’re “public” and firearms should be allowed. I’m surprised the NRA hasn’t gotten all over it yet. How about if you just showed up outside on the sidewalk on game days, you know, to keep the peace and look out for bad guys?

Fulton County Stadium was the old Braves/Falcons stadium. It was demolished about 29 years ago. Current Braves stadium is Truist Park. Pretty sure it’s privately owned as the team benefits from all the lease money from venues/restaurants directly outside the park.

Pretty soon you won’t have anything anywhere because someone will want to bring a gun.
  • Halifax2TheMaxHalifax2TheMax Posts: 39,319
It would appear that both the football and baseball stadiums were financed and built with a lot of public money and the argument could be made that “responsible” gun owners should be allowed to carry into an event. I’m not sure how you can argue that you can violate 2A in those venues but not in a “public” park?

I think I’ll email the NRA because we all know that more guns in more places keep us all safer.

I understand why the show was canceled due to the law. I see the legality of it. I just can’t believe the law passed. Or I can, but just don’t see the need for it. As a teacher, it makes me nervous that they’ll allow guns in the schools next.

Not sure why State Farm arena or Mercedes Benz are not having the same problems.

Braves and Falcons games should be next. Unless Mr. Evans just has it out for those Antiiiiiiifa and BLM music lovers?

Weapons and explosives of any kind are prohibited at the festival, according to its website. Gun rights advocates had mounted a pressure campaign against that position, calling into question the festival’s ability to restrict firearms since Georgia allows guns to be carried in parks.

Sources with knowledge of the cancellation decision by operator Live Nation who spoke to Rolling Stone cited Georgia gun laws as the reason.

Georgia gun advocate Phil Evans told CNN he emailed festival organizers in May, apprising them of Georgia gun laws and a Georgia Supreme Court case dealing with guns in which he was a party. Evans said he also asked the City of Atlanta to deny a permit to Live Nation for Music Midtown, given the festival’s ban on firearms.

In the email dated May 13, Evans asked the city to deny the permit for “as they have publicly stated an intent to violate settled state law.”

“The City of Atlanta should respect state law and uphold it when dealing with entities that make use of tax-payer owned properties that wish to make money from such usage, or even otherwise,” the email said.
