Like or hate Post's cover, it's cool that one of the biggest pop stars on the planet - one who has a massive audience almost exclusively comprised of a different demographic than Pearl Jam's fanbase - has an opportunity to play a few songs on Stern and chooses to cover Pearl Jam. Post could have chosen most any song in the world - why not play one of his own, one that his fan base craves?? - yet he not only chose one of Pearl Jam's songs but piggybacked it with a personal story of his connection to both the song and the band. Win/win IMO.
  • That doesn't change the fact that I don't like listening to him sing -- or that I have to bum rides off people.

I'm a fan of Post Malone. This cover is... not great. Still cool to see/hear. Enjoying his new album.

I guess this is what I was getting at: one of the biggest stars on the planet gives a tribute to our favorite band.  How isn't that a good/cool thing?  Post Malone: hey guys, I like PJ too!  PJ fans: get outta here, poser!  LOL

Before anyone gets too chesty about this whole thing...I'm saying this in good fun.  Post Malone covered your favorite band.  It probably wasn't meant for you in the first place.

I think it’s cool that he did it, and I think it benefits Pearl Jam. I appreciate the story and the connection he feels.

I also think its a choice (to go on Stern whose audience is 40-65, play a song/band that audience will know) that can benefit Posty.

I also did not think it was a very good performance. All of these thoughts can be held at the same time.

Cool that he chose this tune, it's in line with many of the covers he's chosen, seems to be pretty enamored of 90s alt/rock/whatever.

Watt's fingerpicking and BVs sound great. Post's vocals are godawful, imo.

Cool he did it though, I guess.

The word "relevant" should always take a qualifier.  Nothing is relevant in the abstract.  A thing must be relevant to something or to someone.  Pearl Jam is relevant to its audience.  Post Malone is relevant to his audience, which is larger than Pearl Jam's in 2022.  Will his audience be larger than Pearl Jam's when he's thirty years in?  Time will tell.  And some people are part of the audience of both Post Malone and Pearl Jam.  Their audiences are not mutually exclusive.

To recap: you lectured through a philosophical wormhole about what it means to hold relevancy because Post Malone spent 3 minutes doing a free-wheeling Pearl Jam cover.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of the execution ( Ed pretty tough to match) it was a tribute & I felt his sincerity with his lil story before about the song as well as the emotion during it.
