I feel like I have a distinct advantage for a lot of late nineties/early aughts popular music from my experience working in record stores at the time.
But then, I completely don't know something like Twenty-One Pilots, or any other insanely popular music that happened after I quit working at record stores and got a "real" job.
While it wasn't always great having to listen to music that I didn't care for, it at least made me somewhat more knowledgeable about the contemporary cultural zeitgeist. Now, I have a 12-year-old daughter, and I don't understand a single word that comes out of her mouth.

I didn't start my clubbing again until 2001 and then I heard a whole bunch of other stuff that I still couldn't name, lol.
