CONFIRMED: Pearl Jam has already started working with producer Andrew Watt

There were some debate whether "the guys" and "coming down" meant Pearl Jam or Chad/Josh in a former interview. But in the Apple Music-interview Eddie clearly states that Pearl Jam has been down in LA and has already started working with Andrew.

Transcript if people don't have time to listen:

Eddie:
It would have been strange to tell the guys in Seattle, because we have been working a lot too, and it would have felt weird to say: "Hey, I'm gonna go and work with this other guy, and these other people, and Chad and all that". That might have felt strange, except for having just been down there and then all these songs like falling off of trees, and then they were ripe, and looked pretty great, tasted pretty great.

Zane Lowe:
And you're not allowing yourself at any moment during this process to second guess, to your point about - if I'm making an album here, do I tell the other guys in Seattle? What's going on here? What's the line am I walking?

Eddie:
I know, we were talking about loyalty and long relationships, right....

Zane Lowe:
Yeah, what an asshole!

Eddie:
Yeah, musical adulatory. But really, it was just the whole process. And then I thought, well this might be a really interesting process because the guys might really like this too. And so then, we kind of kept going and about halfway through, we had all the Pearl Jam fellows come down too and work with Andrew in his space. And with his people, and with his room and other sounds and that was feeling really good too. So, it all balanced out you know, and everyone's feeling great about it and excited about the future and recording in a little bit different way. Pearl Jam's been recording in kind of more laborious long processes and spending time in like the "laboraty", and that was great but you know it's good to kind of move around and switch it up.

IS THIS THE "COMEBACK WITH YIELD AFTER NO CODE" SWERVE WE HAVE NOT BEEN WAITING FOR BUT MIGHT GET?

Very cool of Ed to turn the fellas on to what he was doing… I had heard that PJ was ‘recording’ in LA over the summer (before See, Hear, Ohana, etc). Hope we get to hear it soon! Maybe they are down there again now because of the delay in the EV tour 🤞.

Yeah this is fantastic.  I like that they have all physically been getting into the studio together again.  It seemed as if that didn't happen for Gigaton.  Definitely excited to see what's around the next corner and glad that Watt is producing it.  I agree with what some others have said, that Watt is bringing a whole different energy to at least Ed and hopefully all of Pearl Jam.

It does sound like this is going to happen, but I am not sure how much has happened yet. I could be wrong, but I kind of took what Ed said to maybe mean PJ visited Watt's studio around Ohana. Maybe the week between the two weekends. But I am not sure the actual writing/ recording process has begun. Like I said, I could be wrong!

  • I am definitely getting more and more excited about the idea they’ll work with AW.  I was really reluctant/hesitant when I first heard EV mention it.  But….after seeing Earthling in Newark in addition to blasting the album since it was released - I think I’m fully onboard.

With that said, I do hope Josh Evans will be folded in somehow.  I REALLY love Gigaton and I think a lot of it has to do with JE.

Interesting to see how younger guys like JE and AW impact and work with the band.  I think the guys kinda feed off of their energy.  I also think its fascinating that both JE and AW seem to know the strengths of and where to lean in to get something new out of our boys…

    Exciting times…

    I took this the same.
They’ve checked out the recording space etc, with the view to record there soon.

The quote from Ed literally says they came down and they worked with Andrew. Also, someone in the Smartless podcast thread mentioned that Ed said they came down and worked on a couple of Pearl Jam songs.

Some of my favorite moments in life have been when I’ve found out PJ is in the studio. I’m ecstatic. So unbelievably grateful to know that the guys are actively working on music and are together in the studio. What a gift this band is. I’m excited to get touring again…maybe we will have two albums to break in?? Cheers and Namaste y’all!

  • This is cool, I'm really digging Earthling, but even if true, with all the touring planned for this year, no way they really get deep into it until at least fall, so we're looking at 2023 at the earliest for a new PJ album...and I'll believe that when I see (hear) it ; )

Right doesn’t mean anything will come of it though. Like the BoB sessions and forthcoming album circa Can’t Deny Me. This thread makes it sound like an album is in progress.

It all depends if anything quality falls out, how much, and if they want to move forward with it. They could leave with a single riff, a full album, or a bunch of incomplete/shelved items. Or maybe they all just came to play around with Andrew’s stuff.

“… and everyone's feeling great about it and excited about the future and recording in a little bit different way…”
This is the part that makes me think that a definitive attempt to make a PJ record with Watt is upcoming, & hasn’t already started.
But the part about PJ “working with Andrew” is ambiguous too & could easily be taken the other way 🤷🏻‍♂️

All in all it’s just exciting that the emphasis from them seems to be on getting a PJ album together real soon 👍🏻

They were in LA between SHN and Ohana, and obviosuly between Ohana and Encore, and from rumor mill a couple of weeks after encore.
His eminence has yet to show.
