I can't believe that my chance of seeing this song played live, sung by bruce and the ESB, is actually less than my chance to see EV cover it, especially on the upcoming solo tour.
Bruce really did a great job on this number and I hope ya'll get to hear EV play it!
btw...Nice choice for a cover, Ed
GROWIN' UP©
Live 10 Aug 1972 version
Well I stood stone-like at midnight suspended in my masquerade
And I combed my hair till it looked just right and commanded the night brigade
I was open to pain and crossed by the rain and I walked on a crooked crutch
I strolled all alone through a fallout zone and came out with my soul untouched
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, when they said "sit down" I stood up
Ooooh, growin' up
Well the flag of piracy flew from my mast, my sails were set wing to wing
I had a jukebox graduate for first mate, she couldn't sail but she sure could sing
I pushed B-52 and bombed 'em with the blues with my gear set stubborn on standing
I broke all the rules, strafed my old high school, I never once gave thought to landing
I hid in the clouded warmth of the crowd, but when they said "come down" I threw up
Ooooh, growin' up
I took month-long vacations in the stratosphere, and you know it's really hard to hold your breath
Swear I lost everything I ever loved or feared, was the cosmic kid in full costume dress
But my feet they finally took root in the earth though I got me a nice little place in the stars
And I swear I found the key to the universe in the engine of an old parked car
Whoa I hid in the mother breast of the crowd, but when they said "pull down" I pulled up
Ooooh, growin' up
Ooooh, growin' up
Alright, growin' up

Can you believe I never heard of "Growing Up" until Eddie covered it?
Anyways...I picked up Greetings from Asbury Park shortly afterwards and have been in love with this song and album ever since.
It's Amazing how this is the one Springsteen album and song could fly under my radar for so long. I was more a mainstream fan of his work but it wasn't until Eddie basically taught me "Growing Up" on guitar that I found this wonderful album along with some of the more obscure Springsteen works.
I'm hoping Eddie will play this at least 1 of the 2 nights at Massey Hall. Provided that my 10 Club seats are good enough...I'll get to see if I learned the song correclty

i love ed's version but geez dude, i love you and all but please learn the fuckin words, everytime i've heard ed perform it he messes up the lyrics, drives me nuts
I wonder why?
"Sometimes I burn like a dot on the Sun. With NO ONE knowing..."
Does this mean that thoughts - burning yearnings, hot off "your" press newsbreakers, scientific epiphany run through your brain and no one knows?
No one, as in, a satellite dish multi-station live television broadcast, or , a live radio station feed, or perhaps your hospital (I'm invisioning now) doesn't have a brain feedback machine (like as if you were a rare mental patient of theirs,) or when you are thinking these thoughts, are you simultaneously listening to music that you are synchronizing your thoughts with, therefore too much/many explanations to write down? Or do you simply write them down? I sometimes carry a pad and paper wherever I go, and I also have a good memory. "Sometimes I burn..." doesn't mean you go and smoke a joint?, does it, Eddie?"
I value you.
