Songs better live vs. studio and vice versa (only arbitrary, keep it civil!)

Bear in mind, I'm not going to complain if I hear any of these songs live or in studio. Sometimes with band's noise babies, though, there's a difference. At least we listen to a band that 99% does better live than studio.

Better Studio Version: Rearviewmirror. Don't get me wrong, love hearing this at any show. On the flipside, Eddie was pressuring Dave A. so much toward the end that you can literally hear the frustration come out with the throwing of the sticks. PURE EMOTION that hasn't always translated in live versions.   Honorable mention: U. It's catchy and it just has the sharp and warm Yield session feel from that time.

Better Live Version: Even Flow. I feel this song gets better live year after year. The studio version is slow and doesn't do it justice. I'll still listen to it from Ten, but every time I do I'm secretly thinking of a live version. Honorable mention: Nothing as it Seems. I dig listening to all of Binaural, but it's taken to a completely different level when PJ are on stage playing it.

Great Live & Studio (apples & oranges): Immortality, Given To Fly, Present Tense & I Got Shit. Nuff Said.

Again, y'all are entitled to your opinions, so let a healthy discussion begin

    Without thinking too hard…

Better Studio: Infallible, Sleight of Hand

Better Live: Present Tense, Corduroy, 1/2 full, Crazy Mary

also depends what decade or year of Ed vocals we are basing it on, but these hold up imo across the whole time since release

Studio "Breath" blows away all versions after 1995.

I Got Shit is top of my list for better studio vs. live
Others that come to mind: Breath and All Those Yesterdays

As far as live vs studio: i prefer pretty much all of their songs live, but the two that "surprised" me the most when i heard them live in person were All Night and Let the Records play.

For me, 99.9% of the songs are better live. One song that I do not love live is light years, they seem to struggle with the tempo at times.

Almost all their songs are better live but some of the older songs have new interpretations live. Majority of Ten for me is older live > studio > newer live.

Of the Girl live is better.
Oh man, that one was recorded binaurally though. So much atmosphere on that one. Have you listened to the PJ20 instrumental version lately?

Have not.  I am not a fan of Binaural at all but Of The Girl is good, live it's even better.

Know what, it's my white whale I am chasing live.  Never got it in person yet...

I was lucky to hear it in St.Louis in 2000 and again in Kansas City in 2010. Both great performances! Grab your best set of headphones and have a listen to that instrumental version!

Wishlist - studio is better than live.  Not only because he can never get the lyrics right live but the studio version just sounds better overall.
  • Generally, pretty much all of their stuff is better live. There are a couple that feel like almost completely different songs live.

Better Live: Elderly Woman Behind the Counter In A Small Town, Corduroy, Yellow Ledbetter, Present Tense, Hard to Imagine
Better Studio: Getaway, Faithful, Brother, Off He Goes, All or None

Of what I'm not seeing mentioned...

    Studio: Indifference

    Live: Immortality

Indifference seems to lose its deepness/darkness/eeriness when performed live (although it's still an incredible tune) and Immortality live comes across with a feeling of intensity that I just can't describe.

Better Studio: Smile, Sleight of Hand, Hard to Imagine, Hold On. Need to play the last 2 more often.
    Better Live: Yellow Ledbetter, Pendulum

Off the Girl is equally brilliant live and studio

Most of my PJ listening originates from PJ radio on SiriusXM when I am driving.  It always sounds weird to me when they play a studio track since I am now so used to hearing mostly live versions.

Can you imagine if they went a different route with the studio solo for Immortality? I love the LP version don't get me wrong, but good lord, I could listen to just about every live version of that song from 1995 on.

I Got Id was the first to come to mind. Top 10 studio song for me. Just okay live.
