why all the tags?

do other artists do this? i really don't know. and if so, do people discuss them like we do in this forum?
are the tags there to keep us interested in an old song, possibly?
what do you think?

Interesting question. Never thought about it. I think maybe it gives them a chance to a cover a song but do it in a different way and not have to actually play the whole song if they dont want too but to just take one portion of a song and do something unique with it. I haven't seen too many other groups do this but PJ is not like any other group. Some of the best songs they've played lately have been covers, which is not to say I dont love their originals, but seriously they can make any song magic to me.

I find the whole shift to playing more tags and covers to be very interesting. When you're a young band you probably want to stay away from that as it can be viewed as you not having anything good that you can write. Although they certainly played a lot of covers even back in the day, but I think they do more now. Maybe they just figure fuck it, we're Pearl Jam and we've been around for a long time now and we're going to play what we want.
    Be excellent to each other

I think it is perhaps to make some of the most frequently played songs a bit more interesting. To them and to the audience maybe?

  • i think it just shows what GENUINE fans of music they are. reminds us that they're people and fans as well.........and to pay homage to predecessors.......and to remind us of older music.

    just my two cents, though
Dalai Lama—To say that humility is an essential ingredient in our pursuit of spiritual transformation may seem to be at odds with what I have said about the need for confidence. But there is clearly a distinction to be made between valid confidence or self-esteem, and conceit - which we can describe as an inflated sense of importance, grounded in a false image of self.

    I heart tags!
  • I think the tags are great. It puts a unexplainable mood to the song and that moment. Just the other day on the radio while driving to the city I was listening to a station I normally don't listen to and I heard the original version of "Frightened" You know the words, "I don't know why sometimes I get frightened" Some of the tags are songs from long ago. I think it's great that the band has a very broad interest in all types of music.

  • On the Tragically Hip DVD That Night in Toronto (i was at the show as well) they tag they're own song Fly onto The Hundredth Meridian. Interesting because Fly is off of the most recent World Container...and the show took place 2 or 3 years prior to the release of World Container.

I don't know if this pertains at all to the thread...but just wanted to share.

the daughter ones are brilliant. when u look at how versatile they incorporate the different songs...i mean, look how different style-wise the songs are that they throw in there: the tags also allow for great crowd participation

    AC/DC - Highway To Hell
The Beatles - Look Up The Number, Hide Your Love Away
Ben Harper - With My Two Hands
    Dead Moon - Its OK
    John Lennon - Mother
Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning
    Neil Young - Hey Hey,
    PJ - WMA
    Pink Floyd - ABITW
    Ramones - Miracles
    Sonic Youth - Androgynous Mind
    War

just a few examples of incorporating their fave songs into their own music but totally changing the style from the original
