such as:

black:
boy looses girl, girl looses boy
boy is heartbroken, girl seems to forget

indifference:
boy vows to one day get her back

nothingman:
boy has regrets about his past
wonders why girl gave up on him

....small town:
boy finds girl
girl opens her heart to boy

parachutes:
girl doesn't think she is good enough for boy
boy tries to convince her to come home to him

betterman:
complication. girl is married and even though she is unhappy, she feels she cannot leave, perhaps because of children involved

gone:
boy and girl imagine leaving everything and everyone behind them to be together

comeback:
boy urges girl to come back to him...someday.
girl dreams of the day they can be together

maybe there are others...?..

    Release

    Person says:

"Excuse Me! It's my turn! . . . However, I'll appreciate a little help now and again."

and then walks away on the beach or some sort of open road-esque type thing.

Ed seems to have a patent on the despair/hope formula of songwriting, and in a lot of those songs, leaves the storytelling to the listener.

    There's nothing spooky about that.

    A man's imagination is a powerful tool.

Use it wisely while interpreting lyrics (especially PJ's). The song is only what you make of it, and therein lies its power.

Maybe because, I dunno, Ed has a talent in his writing that brings divided and perhaps even opposing forces/ideas into a singular meaning.

    ..if you listen closely. :)
