    I see the world
    Feel the chill
    Which way to go
    Windowsill
    I see the words
On a rocking horse of time
I see the birds in the rain

    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow
    I'll ride the wave
    Where it takes me
    I'll hold the pain
    Release me

    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow
I'll wait up in the dark
For you to speak to me
    I'll open up
    Release me
    Release me
    Release me
    Release me

  • release is an incomparable song.... one of the best ever sung by humankind
I have faced it, A life wasted...

Take my hand, my child of love
    Come step inside my tears
    Swim the magic ocean,
I've been crying all these years

  • it's an utterly beautiful song, melody and lyrics and Ed's performance combined perfectly to express that nostalgic and optimistic concept. Every time i listen to it, i get filled with emotions. I think it's one of their best songs, and it's a shame they don't play it often. I guess that makes it more special when they do...
I'll ride the wave where it takes me...

For me, Release is the greatest song Pearl Jam have ever done, period. So jealous of people who hear it live, esp. as a set opener.

I recall looking through the 2000 Euro boots many years ago in my local record store to find only one show (San Sebastian) that had it on the setlist!

Release is an awesome song that is very powerful both musically and lyrically. I don't know about others, but I know that this song took on more meaning to me when my father passed away because it expressed some of the same feelings that I was having.

is it not 'oh dear DIANE'? first line second verse? but then who is Diane? Does it matter anyway? Deep and release, the two opposite ends of Pearl Jam's spectrum right beside each other. Prob my two favourite. But there are so many to choose from!

    who's Diane?
    interesting.

what i love in this song is Ed's voice.
It's sooooo deep that you could swimm in it.
When he starts its; so dark, so close and, in the second and third part- he pulles so beatiful and clean hihg nots.
This song shows how proffessional singer is Ed.
Not only talented but skilled as well.

Ed's voice is awesome. He sings it with emotion and passion.
Bonner Springs 2003 version must have been very special.

"A lovely day turned to dark skies, lightning and a torrential downpour starting during Idlewild's set. During the set change, the first row of seats is flooded with water pouring from the upper sections. Mike comes out and tosses several shirts out to the crowd. The stage is mopped, equipment is covered and the band prepares to play as the downpour turns to steady rain and the lightning becomes less threatening. Opening with 'Release,' singing, "Oh, dear Dad, can you see us now? I am myself, like you somehow." (A large streak of lightning flashes across the sky). Ed says, "Hi, Dad." A rather powerful moment, helping fuel the rest of the "short, but sweet" set as the crowd sings the words in the rain..."

Dude, i got a cousin, who has a girlfriend that swore the lyrics were :
"jeremys broken glass again!".. I let her sing it for a few months like that, then took the royal piss out of her!!
You write very much like a drummer i know!! Probably the best god damn drummer this side of Seattle, that i have ever heard and seen!! But some say he is just a mythical creature that beats into the night in a shed beside his house! Some have seen him, but not lived to tell the tale! And some have even heard him during the night, but noone is even close to him! He is, in his own way a Genius, and will be a Legend..... I should introduce you to him!!
    Tattooed Everything!
  • For many more personall reasons than most.. I love this song.. It just well descibes my life.. my whole life and not just me dad but me mom too.. very screwed up situation there.. but thanks to Release I have survived all of it! and yes when they open with this song, you only have to assume that it's gonna be a GREAT show!!! I love when they open with this one!!!
  • that's ok me bro... just to be assinine used to sing it.. "jeremy's smoking crack...today" LMAO

the most heartbreakingly beautiful song I've ever heard. bar none.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • this song hits me on a new level since my dad passed away last year. like when he says "i am myself like you somehow" thats so freakin beautiful

The first time I ever listened to Ten this was my favorite song. It was also the first song I heard Live and in person....

    Great tune
  • This is one of those rare songs that sounds even better now than it did back in the day. Apart from some dodgy versions in 1995 (partly because Ed's voice was shot to hell), the song is even more powerful today than it was in the early 1990s.
Ed sings this much better than he ever has. The 2006 versions are easily my favourite.
"This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."
